Carmela MassaPLS.UK: una label, un progetto, un movimento culturale e soprattutto un’ideale. Ne abbiamo parlato a tu per tu con Time Traveler & FLmm.
Nel 2015 approda nel panorama discografico europeo una nuova label intitolata PLS.UK. L’etichetta nasce dall’idea di produttori italiani ma allora come oggi risiede in pianta stabile a Londra.
Nel corso degli anni abbiamo ascoltato e soprattutto molto apprezzato molti dischi firmati dalla label italo-britannica.
Ricordiamo con particolare attenzione il primo volume “PLS.UK001”, a cura di Ansome e Ossian. Lavoro discografico che ha lasciato il segno e che ha permesso al pubblico di comprendere da subito lo stile e lo spirito dell’etichetta.
Dopo il raffinatissimo debutto abbiamo visto promuovere attraverso PLS.UK musica di alta qualità e sempre più ricercata, puntando i riflettori su artisti che già domavano la scena underground come Ayarcana, I Hate Models, JoeFarr e Scalameriya.
Ma ciò che ha contraddistinto dal primo disco la mentalità PLS.UK è la capacità di fiutare il talento nelle giovani promesse, ma di questo ne parleremo anche nel corso dell’interessantissima intervista rilasciata dai due artisti più rappresentativi della label: Time Traveler & FLmm.
Attualmente la realtà discografica è promossa proprio da Michele e Mino. Due produttori brillanti con un bagaglio artistico e culturale davvero notevole, messo in evidenza nel loro ultimo lavoro intitolato “Power Levelling Sequence”.

Michele e Mino insieme gestite PLS.UK Etichetta indipendente che a poco a poco ha conquistato il panorama underground europeo. Quando avviene l’incontro tra di voi e come nasce l’idea di questa collaborazione?
FL/TT: PLS.UK ha visto all’interno di questi anni molte persone che hanno aiutato il percorso e la crescita di questa label.
Fondatori erano Mino e Alessio Sologno, ma per varie circostanze Alessio recentemente ha deciso di interrompere il suo percorso in questo progetto, certamente la sua presenza nella label è stata davvero molto importante.
Nello stesso anno ci siamo conosciuti a Berlino eravamo nella stessa line-up per il party Motz all’Arena Club. Dopo di che la nostra amicizia si è rafforzata molto sino a decidere di collaborare insieme prima come artisti e poi anche nella gestione della label.
Su PLS.UK abbiamo visto moltissimi volti promettenti del panorama techno europeo. Abbiamo visto I Hate Models, Ansome, Ayarcana e anche alcuni artisti che abbiamo inserito nella nostra rubrica ItalianAffair come Rvde, Danilo Incorvaia e Br1002. Quindi voi oltre a essere eccellenti produttori sembra quasi che abbiate fiuto per il talento. C’è qualche giovane proposta su cui suggerite di puntare l’attenzione?
FL/TT: PLS.UK nasce proprio per supportare gli artisti emergenti del momento, ed è un’immenso piacere aver creduto sin dall’inizio nei nomi sopra citati, ma sopratutto vederli ora predominare la scena Europea non ha prezzo.
Oggi abbiamo puntato occhi su alcuni nuovi talenti come Varya Karpova from Russia, e artisti già immersi nella scena come Matasism, e tanti altri che preferiremmo non menzionare solo per non rovinare l’effetto sorpresa, certamente si rivedranno artisti come BR1002 RVDE e Danilo Incorvaia apparire di nuovo nella label.
Come definireste il genere di musica promosso sulla vostra label e che obiettivo vorreste raggiungere attraverso di essa?
FL/TT: PLS.UK promuove un suono dal range molto ampio, come vuole la tradizione della techno UK, dal suono Raw e industrial ai beat jungle rave e acid. Il nostro obiettivo è quello di supportare e promuovere come sempre questa scena, cercando di promuovere artisti sempre più giovani dandoli la giusta visibilità nel panorama della musica elettronica e continuare a promuovere solo musica di ”qualità”, non guardando il profilo artistico (Social Media). Il sound è il cuore di tutto ed è l’unica cosa che conta per poter far parte del nostro roaster.
Lo scorso ottobre abbiamo seguito l’uscita di “FLMM & Time Traveler Present: Power Levelling Sequence VA 02”, il various artist che consacra un po’ l’ingresso di Michele nella label. Il sound di questo lavoro discografico è diretto, senza mezze misure. Un disco così audace nasconde sicuramente un messaggio molto forte. Cosa vorreste comunicare attraverso di esso ai vostri ascoltatori?
FL/TT: Insieme abbiamo voluto usare un sound più fresh e meno cupo mantenendo un beat hard groove tipico dei nostri sound, oserei dire che ci siamo spinti molto verso quelle sonorità elettroniche tipiche del panorama British, il nostro intento era comunicare al pubblico e agli Artisti che ci seguono che PLS.UK sta aprendo le proprie sonorità su un panorama molto più vasto che in precedenza, e nessun modo è più eloquente se a proporre un nuovo suono sian i label owners.
Ascoltando la vostra traccia del VA, intitolata “Power Levelling Sequence”, la sensazione percepita è quella di sentire all’opera due personalità artistiche ben distinte, che riescono però a fondersi perfettamente in un unico prodotto discografico. La nostra è una giusta sensazione? Oppure siete molto più vicini da un punto di vista artistico?
FL/TT: Direi che siamo ben assortiti, tra i ricami di sound design di Mino e hard beat di MIchele,
abbiamo trovato un compromesso che soddisfasse entrambi il risultato è stato che anche scostandosi dalla più che abusata sonorità industrial siamo in grado di produrre un disco “nervoso” e allo stesso tempo “dreamy” con dei chiari richiami alla “rave-uk”. Non amiamo dare “etichettare” la musica in un genere specifico, ma certamente il suono che sentirete provenire da Time Traveler/FLmm è frutto di quello che respiriamo nelle strade di Londra.
Ora proviamo a conoscere un po’ meglio sia Michele che Mino. Avete iniziato ad avvicinarvi al djing e alla produzione direttamente dalla musica techno o avete avuto il primo approccio a questo mondo attraverso altri generi di musica?
TT: la storia d’amore e odio tra me e la musica inizia quando a 6 anni ricevetti come regalo da parte di mio padre e mia madre la mia prima chitarra, diciamo che da quel giorno la musica è stata una delle presenze più importanti nella mia vita, a 14 anni iniziai a frequentare i clubs quando dopo il mio primo rave in un warehouse ad Hackney durante una vacanza studio a Londra mi innamorai definitivamente della techno
FLmm: Ho iniziato ad avvicinarmi nel vita del club all’eta di 15 anni più o meno, mi ricordo delle infinite giornate chiuso nella mia camera mixando dai vinili al primo approccio con cdj…sino a quando un mio amico e promoter [Stefano Brescia attuale owner di Sowhul District], mi invito a suonare e da li fu subito amore, negli anni successivi insieme collaborammo in tanti altri party che mi permisero di conoscere altri artisti, ed ad essere invitato di conseguenza a esibirmi in altri club.
Ho vissuto in Italia fino al 2012 poi decisi di andare via per poter studiare e conseguire una laurea in Audio Ingegneria e Sound Design alla Point Blank a Londra. Durante i miei anni universitari iniziai a frequentare la scena clubbing inglese, fu li che conobbi Kieran (Ansome), grazie a lui suonai per la prima volta ai Corsica Studio, per la S.l.a.m night e fu li che conobbi Krista, una delle persone più belle che abbia conosciuto in questo ambiente, dove periodicamente mi dava la possibilità di organizzare le mie label night.
I dischi di quali artisti hanno maggiormente influenzato il vostro percorso?
TT: Senza dubbio alcuno, Gaetano Parisio, Dave Clarke, Olivier Abbeloos aka Quadrifonia aka T99, e nel mio caso tanto proveniente dal panorama Heavy Metal e Industrial come Megadeth, Skinny Puppy, Front 242.
FL: MMM, Ivan Smagghe, Advent & Industrialyzer, sono certamente glia artisti che più hanno influenzato la mia gioventù.
Quali sono i progetti in cantiere di Time Traveler e quali sono quelli di FLMM?
TT: Dopo aver fatto il remix di Anasthasia T99, io e Olivier siamo diventati amici, e con lui ho in programma un’uscita per una label davvero fantastica, in più ovviamente ho in programma un Ep su Pls.UK supportato già da molti artisti.
FL: Negli ultimi due anni sono stato barricato il più possibile nel mio studio, dove finalmente sono riuscito ad sedermi e scrivere tante tracce che rilascerò ovviamente sulla mia label.
Inoltre con Michele stiamo lavorando ad un sacco di tracce come FL/TT di cui alcune usciranno nei prossimi mesi.

In 2015, a new label entitled PLS.UK come to European record landscape. The label was born from the idea of Italian producers but now resides on a permanent basis in London.
Over the years we have listened and above all very appreciated many discs signed by the Italian-British label.
We remember with particular attention the first volume “PLS.UK001”, edited by Ansome and Ossian. Record work that left its mark and that allowed the public to immediately understand the style and spirit of the label.
After the very refined debut we saw promoting through PLS.UK, high quality and increasingly sought music, focusing the spotlight on artists who already dominated the underground scene like Ayarcana, I Hate Models, JoeFarr e Scalameriya.
But what distinguished the PLS.UK mentality from the first album is the ability to smell talent in young promises, but we will also talk about this during the very interesting interview given by the two most representative artists of the label: Time Traveler & FLmm.
Currently the record company is promoted by Michele and Mino. Two brilliant producers with a truly remarkable artistic and cultural background, highlighted in their latest work entitled “Power Leveling Sequence”.
Michele and Mino, together you two run PlsUk, an independent record label that has gradually captured the European underground scene. When did the meeting between you took place and how did the idea of this collaboration came about?
FL/TT: PLS.UK has seen within these years many people who have helped the development and growth of this label.
Founders were Mino and Alessio Sologno, but for various circumstances Alessio recently decided to terminate his journey into this project, and certainly his presence on the label has been very important.
In the same year we met in Berlin, where we shared the same line-up for the Motz party at the Arena Club. After that our friendship was strengthened a lot until we decided to collaborate together first as artists and then also in managing the label.
On Pls.Uk we saw many promising names from the European techno scene. We saw I Hate Models, Ansome, Ayarcana and also some artists we have included in our ItalianAffair column like Rvde, Danilo Incorvaia and Br1002. So you are not only an excellent producer, but you also seem to have a good instinct for talent. Is there any young talent you would suggest to focus your attention on?
FL/TT: PLS.UK was born to support the emerging artists of the moment, and it’s a great joy to have always believed in the above mentioned names, but most of all is priceless to see them now dominating the European scene.
Today we have set our eyes to some new talents like Varya Karpova from Russia, and artists already involved in the scene like Matasism, and many others that we would prefer not to mention just not to spoil the element of surprise. Of course we will see artists like BR1002 RVDE and Danilo Incorvaia appearing again on the label.
How would you define the kind of music you promote on your label and what you would like to achieve through it?
FL/TT: PLS.UK promotes a very wide range of sound, as the UK techno tradition wants, from Raw and industrial sound to jungle rave and acid beats. Our goal is to support and promote as always this scene, trying to promote more and more young artists, giving them the proper visibility in the electronic music scene and continue to promote only “quality” music, not looking at the artistic profile (Social Media). Sound is the heart of everything and it’s the only thing that counts to be a part of our roaster.
Last October we had the opportunity to follow the release of “FLMM & Time Traveler Present: Power Levelling Sequence VA 02”, the various artist that marks Michele’s entry into the label. The sound of this recording is straight forward, without hesitations. Such a bold record definitely conceals a very strong message. What would you like to communicate through it to your listeners?
FL/TT: Together we wanted to use a fresher and less gloomy sound while maintaining a hard groove beat typical of our sounds, I would say that we have gone very far towards those electronic sounds typical of the British panorama, our aim was to communicate to the public and to the artists who follow us that PLS.UK is expanding its sounds on a much wider panorama than before, and no way is more eloquent if to propose a new sound are the label owners.
Listening to your VA track, titled “Power Levelling Sequence”, the perceived sensation is to hear two very distinct artistic personalities at work, but they manage to blend perfectly into a single record product. Is it the right impression? Or are you much closer from an artistic point of view?
FL/TT: I’d say we are well matched, between Mino’s sound design embroidery and MIchele’s hard beat,
we found a compromise that satisfied both of us: the outcome was that even moving away from the over-abused industrial soundscapes we were able to produce a “nervous” and at the same time “dreamy” record with clear references to the “rave-uk”. We don’t like to “label” music in a specific genre, but certainly the sound you hear coming from Time Traveler/FLmm is the result of what we breathe in the streets of London.
Now let’s try to get to know both Michele and Mino a little better. Did you start to get closer to djing and production directly from techno music or did you have the first contact with this world through other genres of music?
TT: the story of love and hate between me and music starts when at 6 years old I received my first guitar as a gift from my mother and father. Since that day music has been one of the most important presences in my life. When I was 14 years old I started attending clubs and after my first rave in a warehouse in Hackney during a study holiday in London I definitely fell in love with techno.
FLmm: I started to move closer to the club at the age of 15 years more or less, I remember the infinite days locked in my room mixing from vinyl to the first approach with cdj … until a friend of mine and promoter [Stefano Brescia current owner of Sowhul District], invited me to play and from there it was immediately love. in the next years together we worked together in many other parties that allowed me to meet other artists, and to be invited consequently to perform in other clubs.
I lived in Italy until 2012 and then I decided to leave to study and get a degree in Audio Engineering and Sound Design at Point Blank in London. During my university years I started attending the English clubbing scene, it was there that I met Kieran (Ansome), thanks to him I played for the first time at Corsica Studio, for the S.l.a.m night and it was there that I met Krista, one of the most beautiful people I have ever met in this environment, who regularly gave me the opportunity to organize my label nights.
Which artists’ records have most affected your journey?
TT: Undoubtedly Gaetano Parisio, Dave Clarke, Olivier Abbeloos aka Quadrifonia aka T99, and for me as much from the Heavy Metal and Industrial scene as Megadeth, Skinny Puppy, Front 242.
FL: MMM, Ivan Smagghe, Advent & Industrialyzer are certainly the artists who most influenced my youth.
Which are the projects in the pipeline of Time Traveler and which are those of FLMM?
TT: After doing the remix of Anasthasia T99, Olivier and I have become friends, and I have a really fantastic label release planned with him, plus of course I have an Ep on Pls.UK that is already being supported by many artists.
FL: In the last two years I’ve been locked as much as possible in my studio, where I finally managed to sit down and write a lot of tracks that I will release on my label.
Also with Michele we are working on a lot of tracks like FL/TT and some of them will be released in the next months.
