DJ Deeon: “Chicago è tutto per me: gioia e dolore”

Quando si parla di sotto-generi della musica House, c’è uno e un solo re se si parla di House dall’anima Ghetto. Questo re è DJ Deeon.

DJ Deeon non è solo una figura chiave della Chicago anni ’80 e ’90, quando la musica House esplodeva e lui stesso si prendeva carico della creazione di un sotto-genere estremamente freaky e libero. DJ Deeon è anche, indirettamente, un personaggio importante per quanto riguarda la scena contemporanea.

Se, infatti, i suoi original mix vengono continuamente passati dai migliori artisti e sulle migliori console del pianeta, i remix delle sue tracce raccolgono un successo difficile da immaginare, vedi il remix di “Freak Like Me” da parte di Lee Walker.

Per il resto, le lyrics di alcune sue tracce non sono altro che la perfetta descrizione dell’anima della sua musica: “Shake What Your Mama Gave Ya”, “Groove Mode”, “Freaky”, “Pump That Shit”.

Sei senza dubbio una delle istituzioni di musica dance di Chicago. Puoi provare a descrivere cosa significa Chicago per te alle persone italiane ed europee?

Chicago è tutto per me, gioia, dolore, tristezza, eccitazione e delusione. Le persone italiane ed europee che vedo sono libere quando si tratta di questa musica, è ovunque, ogni genere. Nessuna ignoranza del suono di altri posti.

A proposito di Chicago, quali sono gli artisti, i club, i brani e i promoter che ti hanno ispirato nei giorni in cui hai iniziato a suonare e produrre?

Artisti: Mike Dunn, Chip E, Steve Hurley, Farley Keith, Marshall Jefferson, Jesse Saunders, Vince Lawrence. Ogni traccia che hanno fatto mi ha ispirato.

Tu sei il “padre” della Ghetto House. Puoi dirci qual è la sua vera anima?

La vera anima per me è il ritmo e la linea di basso. Questa è la base per me. La merda minimale è la migliore merda che tu abbia mai sentito.

Sarai al fianco degli headliner di Appelsap ad Amsterdam. Sei eccitato per questo e per la formazione interessante e unica?

Sono molto eccitato! Mi piace quando sono ad Amsterdam! Onorato di questa formazione!

Quali sono le tue precedenti esperienze ad Amsterdam? Cosa pensi della scena musicale elettronica lì e in Europa in generale?

La gente! Ho ricevuto tanti feedback da Amsterdam tramite i social media! E contrariamente alla mia cosiddetta natura misogina, le donne dicono che amano assolutamente la musica.

Dance Mania ovviamente significa molto nella tua carriera. Com’è il tuo rapporto con l’etichetta e con il suo fondatore Jesse Saunders?

Non so, mi occupo di Raymond Barney, è l’unico fondatore che conosca personalmente. Nessuna mancanza di rispetto.

Sei il creatore di alcune tracce House iconiche. In che modo tracce come “Freak Like Me” e “2 B Free” hanno visto la luce?

Mio buon amico, Jack Revill! Aka Jackmaster ha visto la luce e ancora la vede!

Alcune delle tue tracce stanno vivendo una seconda giovinezza grazie a brillanti remix, in particolare il remix di “Freak Like Me” di Lee Walker. Cosa ne pensi di questa cosa, ne sei felice?

Presto pubblicherò un album di acapellas per il mondo per portare a nuova vita questa merda!!!

You are without any doubt one of Chicago’s dance music institutions. Can you try to describe what Chicago means to you and why to Italian and European people?

Chicago is everything to me, joy, heartbreak, sorrow, excitement, and disappointment. The Italian and European people I see are free when it comes to this music, its everywhere, every genre. No ignorance to the sound of other lands.

Talking about Chicago, what are the artists, clubs, tracks and promoters that inspired you back in the days, when you first started djing and producing?

 Artists: Mike Dunn, chip E, Steve Hurley, Farley Keith Marshall Jefferson, Jesse Saunders, Vince Lawrence. Every track they have done has inspired me.

You are the “father” of Ghetto House. Can you tell us what the true soul of Ghetto House is?

The true soul for me is the beat and the bassline. That’s the foundation for me. The minimal shit is the best shit you will ever hear.

You are going to be alongside the headliners of Appelsap in Amsterdam. Are you excited about it and about the interesting and unique line up? 

I am very excited!  I get like that when I’m in Amsterdam! Honored to be in this lineup!

What are your previous experiences in Amsterdam? What do you think about the electronic music scene there and in Europe in general? 

The people! I got so much feedback from Amsterdam via social media! And contrary to my so called misogynistic nature, the women say they absolutely love the music.

Dance Mania obviously means a lot in your career. How’s your relationship with the label and with its founder Jesse Saunders? 

I don’t know about that info, I deal with Raymond Barney, that’s the only founder I personally know. No disrespect intended. 

You are the creator of iconic House tracks. How did tracks like “Freak Like Me” and “2 B Free” saw the light? 

My good friend, Jack Revill! Aka Jackmaster saw the vision and still does!

Some of your tracks are living a second youth thanks to brilliant remixes, especially the remix of “Freak Like Me” by Lee Walker. What do you think about this thing, are you happy about it? 

Soon I will release an album of acapellas for the world to bring new life to this shit!!!
