Giovanni PapiniIn occasione della recente uscita del suo ultimo EP “Dreamcatcher”, Fred Lenix ci racconta il progetto più da vicino, oltre che il passato ed il futuro della sua carriera. L’intervista.
Fred Lenix è uno degli astri nascenti della nuova generazione della musica elettronica. Brasiliano di nascita e trasferitosi in Turchia, Fred è un ingegnere del suono che ci proietta nel futuro. Un talento che è stato promosso da artisti come Maceo Plex, Solomun, Tale Of Us, Adam Beyer, PAN-POT, e tanti altri. Tra questi anche gli ARTBAT, con cui ha rilasciato da poco il suo ultimo EP “Dreamcather” su UPPERGROUND, label del duo ucraino.
Partendo da quest’ultima produzione, abbiamo avuto un’interessante chiacchierata con Fred. L’ispirazione in giovane età, la contaminazione culturale, il ruolo delle arti visive, i progetti futuri, e i sogni. Buona lettura!
Ciao Fred, benvenuto su Parkett Channel! Cominciamo con il tuo ultimo EP “Dreamcather” con gli ARTBAT, pubblicato su UPPERGROUND. Come è nato questo singolo?
Ciao, grazie per avermi ospitato. Stavo trascorrendo un po’ di tempo con la mia famiglia in Brasile quando abbiamo iniziato a lavorare su “Dreamcatcher”. Avevo un’idea di melodia e l’ho trasmessa ad Artur e Batish. Subito dopo ci siamo messi in contatto per vedere cosa si poteva fare. Abbiamo lavorato sulla traccia ripetutamente fino a quando il brano non è stato completato. È successo tutto in modo così naturale. Sono stato molto felice che abbiano voluto lavorare con me.
Com’è stato lavorare con gli ARTBAT?
Per lo più ci troviamo in paesi diversi a causa delle date dei nostri tour. A volte può essere impegnativo quando gli artisti lavorano a distanza, ma per noi non è stato così. Fin dall’inizio c’è stato un buon affiatamento e una buona comprensione di ciò che volevamo. Scambiare idee e parlare di musica con loro mi ha fatto capire quanto ancora posso imparare e sicuramente è stato un passo enorme per me.
Puoi parlarci dei tuoi prossimi progetti?
Ho un singolo in uscita per l’etichetta di Camelphat “When Stars Align” all’inizio di marzo. Il brano si chiama “Surrender” e alla voce c’è il mio talentuoso amico “Overgivelse“. Camelphat e io abbiamo suonato il brano per un po’ di tempo. Sono molto entusiasta di pubblicare il brano su un’etichetta di proprietà di artisti così rispettati.
Da dove nasce il tuo desiderio di diventare un produttore?
Quando vivevo in Brasile, dividevamo la camera da letto con mio zio “Maicon”, alias “Charcott“, che era ed è un dj e produttore. Aveva un proprio impianto all’angolo. Sentirlo produrre musica di notte e vederlo tornare dai concerti la mattina presto mi è bastato per iniziare.
Nel corso della tua giovane carriera, quali sono state le tue fonti di ispirazione? Sia come produttore che al di fuori del mondo della musica. Come si ispira Fred Lenix?
All’inizio volevo solo essere come mio zio. Facevo finta di suonare e mixare dischi mentre lui non c’era. In seguito, quando ha visto che ero interessato, ha iniziato a farmi conoscere alcuni dei dischi che suonava. Tra questi Anthony Rother, Drexcia, Mariel Ito/Maetrik, Aril Brikha, The Time Writer e molti altri. Ma oltre ai dischi e agli artisti, col tempo mi sono reso conto di trarre ispirazione dalle arti visive, come un dipinto o un film. A volte guardo la scena di un film che mi piace e inizio a produrre guardandolo in sordina. Cerco di creare un’atmosfera e una sensazione come nella scena. Per lo più si tratta di film fantascientifici e futuristici.
Cosa pensi della scena elettronica di oggi?
Sicuramente la scena sta gravitando verso una scala più ampia. Vedo molti artisti di talento che entrano in scena e molti nuovi fan. È emozionante vedere come le nuove tecnologie stiano influenzando la scena e sfidino noi artisti a pensare fuori dagli schemi. Secondo me è sempre più difficile per gli artisti farsi valere e per i nuovi artisti emergere, perché tutto sta accadendo troppo in fretta. Il consumo di musica è più veloce che mai e questo accorcia l’attenzione.
Tu sei un ragazzo brasiliano che poi si è trasferito in Turchia. Queste due realtà molto diverse, se confrontate, cosa ti hanno dato in più per eccellere nel tuo lavoro?
Sono stato più esposto al sound degli artisti americani e la musica in Brasile è sempre stata funky per me. Trasferirmi in Turchia ed essere più vicino all’Europa ha sicuramente influenzato il suono e lo stile che ascolto. Credo che mi abbia dato la possibilità di fondere il suono Techno/Electro americano con la sensibilità melodica dell’Europa.
Concludo chiedendoti, qual è il sogno di Fred Lenix?
All’inizio della mia carriera, il mio sogno era quello di firmare la mia musica con artisti che mi ispirassero. Oggi mi sento fortunato e orgoglioso di lavorare con alcuni di loro e di fare delle performance al loro fianco. Il sound design è la mia passione, voglio spingermi a raccontare storie sonore in uno scenario diverso. E spero di ispirare altri a fare lo stesso e alla fine vedere il mio nome tra gli artisti che ammiro.

Hi Fred, welcome to Parkett Channel! Let’s start with your latest EP ‘Dreamcather’ with ARTBAT released on UPPERGROUND. How did this single come about?
Hi, thank you for having me. I was spending some time with my family in Brazil back when we started working on “Dreamcatcher”. I had an idea of a melody and forwarded to Artur and Batish. Next thing I knew we jumped on a call to see what can be done. We worked on the track back and forth until the track was done. Everything happened so naturally. I was very happy that they wanted to work with me.
What was it like working with ARTBAT?
We mostly are in different countries due to our tour dates. It can sometimes be challenging when artists work from a distance, but this was not the case for us. Since the beginning we had a good chemistry and understanding of what we wanted. Exchanging ideas and talking about music with them made me realize how much more I can learn and certainly it has been a huge step for me.
Can you tell us about your next projects?
I have a single coming out on Camelphat’s label “When Stars Align” in the beginning of March. The track is called “Surrender” and the vocals features my talented friend “Overgivelse”. Camelphat and I have been playing the track for some time now. Very excited to be releasing it on a label owned by such respected artists.
Where did the desire to become a producer come from?
When I was living in Brazil, we used to share a bedroom with my uncle “Maicon” a.k.a “Charcott”, who was/is a Dj/producer. He had is own set up on the corner. Hearing him produce music at night and seeing him coming back from the gigs in an early morning was enough for me to get started.
Throughout your young career, what have been your sources of inspiration? Both as a producer but also outside the world of music. How do you inspire Fred Lenix?
In the beginning I just wanted to be like my uncle. I would pretend to play and mix records while he was gone. Later on when he saw that I was interested he started introducing me to some of the records he plays. Among them was Anthony Rother, Drexcia, Mariel Ito/Maetrik, Aril Brikha, The Time Writer and many more. But besides records and artists, with time I realized I get inspiration from visual arts like a painting or a movie. Sometimes I open a movie scene that I like and start producing by watching it on mute. Try to create an ambience and feeling as in the scene. Mostly sci-fi futuristic ones.
What do you think of today’s electronic scene?
Certainly the scene is gravitating towards a larger scale. I see lots of talented artists step in and lots of new fans. It is exciting to see how new technologies are affecting the scene and challenging us artists to think outside of the box. In my opinion it’s getting harder for artists to stand their ground and new artists to come up as everything is happening too fast. The music consumption is faster than ever which shortens the attention.
You are a Brazilian guy who later moved to Turkey. These two very different realities, when compared, what did they give you more to excel in your work?
I was more exposed to American artists’ sound and the music in Brazil has always been funky for me. Moving to Turkey and being closer to Europe definitely affected the sound and style that I listen to. I believe it gave me a perspective to blend in the American Techno/Electro sound with the melodic sensibilities of europe.
I conclude by asking, what is the dream for Fred Lenix?
In the beginning of my career, my dream was to sign my music with artists that inspired me. Now I’m feeling blessed and proud to be working with some of them today and getting performances along side. Sound design is my passion, I wanna push my self to tell sonic stories in a different scape. And hopefully inspire others to do the same and eventually see my name among artists that I admire.
