RedazioneIn occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo LP “Dál Riata”, abbiamo avuto il piacere di intervistare Gary Beck, figura emblematica della scena techno scozzese e nome conosciuto a livello internazionale grazie alle sue performance nei più famosi club e festival del mondo.
Gary Beck ci ha raccontato del suo progetto “BEK Audio”, etichetta nata nel 2009 con l’obiettivo di produrre “techno energica, potente e graffiante” e su cui hanno firmato release nomi del calibro di DJ Rush, Mark Broom o Speedy J.
Dopo un primo album su Soma Records nel 2012, Gary ha pensato di tornare “a casa” per il suo secondo LP, in uscita il 19 novembre, scegliendo dunque BEK Audio come etichetta. “Dál Riata” è un album di techno orientata alla pista da ballo, in cui ritroviamo il gusto per atmosfere da warehouse e tracce fortemente ballabili, nella migliore tradizione di una certa corrente di techno anglosassone e firma stessa del DJ e produttore. Vi sono, però, anche alcune sonorità nuove, che, insieme al lavoro creativo e al titolo dell’album stesso, ricordano ambientazioni celtiche e si aprono a paesaggi sonori più delicati, forse anche inaspettati.
In questa esclusiva intervista per Parkett, Gary Beck ci ha raccontato di questo lavoro, ma anche dei suoi progetti futuri e del perché ama suonare in Italia.
Ciao Gary e benvenuto su Parkett. Suoni e produci musica da oltre 10 anni, come hai visto cambiare la scena della musica techno nel Regno Unito e quale pensi sia la situazione oggi?
Credo che nei dieci anni della mia esperienza la scena sia sempre stata piuttosto forte, ma devo dire che nell’ultimo periodo lo è ancora di più e ne sono davvero contento. La musica elettronica è molto popolare oggi e la scena techno cresce notevolmente. Purtroppo molti club hanno chiuso, ma nuovi sembrano aprire allo stesso tempo.
Vivi ancora in Scozia? Come descriveresti la scena e la sua evoluzione lì?
Certo! Non credo che riuscirei a vivere in nessun altro posto: la scena è fantastica e le persone ne vanno matte. Suonare in Scozia è per me sempre un piacere, abbiamo club stupendi come il SWG3 o il Sub Club e l’atmosfera è davvero fantastica.
Parliamo della tua etichetta BEK Audio. Per molti anni hai prodotto musica su altre label, ma sei ora completamente focalizzato su questo progetto. Come è nata l’esigenza di avere una tua etichetta? Ti focalizzi su un tipo di suono specifico? Come scegli gli artisti per BEK Audio?
Ho sempre voluto avere una mia piattaforma dove produrre ciò che volevo e quando volevo. Inizialmente l’idea di BEK Audio nacque per la mia musica, ma questo cambiò dopo aver ascoltato demo di artisti del calibro di Mark Broom e Slam. L’idea di base è quella di non avere regole, ma il tipo di suono che mi interessa è techno energica, potente e graffiante. Il prossimo anno festeggeremo 10 anni e stiamo preparando un’uscita celebrativa molto particolare.
Il tuo primo album fu “Bring a Friend” nel 2012 su Soma Records. Cosa è cambiato nel suono di Gary Beck da quell’album?
Non così tanto, in realtà! Continuo ad usare la stessa strumentazione nel mio studio, ma ho sempre nuove idee. Non voglio allontanarmi dal mio suono, perchè ha una sua identità e funziona bene in pista. E’ molto importante non perdere quello, a mio parere.
Il tuo nuovo LP “Dál Riata” uscirà alla fine di novembre, dopo 6 anni dal tuo ultimo album. C’è un motivo in particolare dietro questa lunga attesa?
Negli ultimi anni sono usciti diversi miei EP, ma avevo voglia di un progetto nuovo che potesse tenermi attivo nello studio. Mi sono divertito davvero a produrre il mio ultimo lavoro, quindi ho pensato: “perchè no?” Nello stesso tempo, mio padre aveva avuto alcune idee interessanti per gli artwork …quindi tutto è successo davvero al momento giusto.
Ascoltando l’anteprima del tuo album, vi ho trovato una varietà di suoni techno molto particolare, da tracce fatte per la pista e da ballare, fino ad atmosfere più aperte ed inaspettate. Sei d’accordo con la mia descrizione? Come lo descriveresti a tua volta?
Sì, credo sia una buona descrizione. Volevo mantenere un approccio orientato al dance-floor e, nello stesso tempo, produrre qualche traccia diversa, da affiancare a quelle fatte per ballare. L’insieme che ne risulta riflette esattamente quello che provo al momento in pista e l’obiettivo era proprio questo. Si ritrova anche un’atmosfera “celtica” che ho voluto sviluppare a partire dal titolo dell’album, la copertina o il suono di corde presenti in alcune tracce come ‘Dál Riata’ e ‘Absolute Gem’.
Hai suonato in alcuni dei migliori club e festival del mondo. C’è un posto dove ancora non sei stato e vorresti suonare?
Non sono mai stato in Messico, è sulla mia lista! Anche l’Islanda mi piacerebbe molto.
Hai suonato spesso anche in Italia, ti piace venire nel nostro Paese? Cosa pensi della scena e dei fan italiani?
L’Italia è uno dei posti in cui mi piace di più suonare, mi diverto sempre un sacco. Tutto quello che c’è nel vostro Paese è fantastico: il cibo, le persone…e il calcio! Le persone sono sempre pronte a far festa e, in qualità di DJ, questo non può che farmi immensamente piacere. Ora ho anche molti amici in Italia ed una connessione molto forte con loro.
Tra i nuovi nomi italiani, tra DJ e produttori, c’è qualcuno che ha particolarmente catturato la tua attenzione?
Ho ascoltato cose molto interessanti di Yhuman: è un ragazzo che lavora sodo e sta iniziando a vedere ottimi risultati.
Hai collaborato con alcuni dei più grandi nomi della techno, come Mark Broom e Speedy J. C’è qualcun altro con cui ti piacerebbe collaborare?
Una collaborazione con Jon Hopkins sarebbe qualcosa di fantastico!
Cosa c’è nel futuro di Gary Beck?
Ho un sacco di nuova musica che mi piacerebbe far uscire e che non vedo l’ora di condividere. Spero di poter continuare a suonare nei migliori club e festival del mondo.

With his new LP “Dál Riata” out on the 19th November, Gary Beck is one of the most influential names of the Scottish techno scene and has gained global recognition thanks to his appearances in some of the best clubs and festivals around the world.
We had the pleasure of interviewing the artist, who told us about his project “BEK Audio”: a label born in 2009 with the aim of focusing on “exciting, energetic and raw techno” and where artists of the likes of DJ Rush, Mark Broom and Speedy J have released.
After his first album out on Soma Records in 2012, Gary thought that it was time to come back to his own project and chose BEK Audio for his second LP. “Dál Riata” is techno for the dance-floor, made of those bangers, raw sounds and warehouse atmospheres typical of Gary’s style. At the same time, more open soundscapes and a sort of “Celtic feel” permeate this work, starting from the title of the album, the artwork and a very interesting string work in some tracks.
Gary walked us through this project and shared with us some of his upcoming projects and the reason why he loves playing in Italy.
Hi Gary and welcome to Parkett. You have been Djing and producing music for more than 10 years now, how did you see the techno scene evolving in the UK and what’s its state now, in your opinion?
I feel in my 10 years’ experience it has always been relatively strong, however at this point in time it’s stronger than ever, which is great to see. Electronic music is so popular right now, and the Techno scene especially is growing all the time. Of course, there have been clubs closing, however new ones seem to be popping up as well.
Are you still based in Scotland? How would you describe the scene and its evolution there?
Yes. I wouldn’t live anywhere else! The scene is brilliant here. The people are just mad for it! Playing in Scotland is always an absolute pleasure and I can’t see it slowing down any time soon. We have amazing clubs like SWG3 and the famous Sub Club, and it’s growing all the time.
Let’s talk about your label, BEK Audio. After spending years releasing on other outlets, you are now fully focused on your own label project. Why did you feel the need of having your own label? Is there a specific imprint or type of sound that you are after? How do you choose the artists releasing on BEK Audio?
I always wanted to have a platform of my own to release what I wanted, and when I wanted. Initially I set out to release only my own music however that quickly changed after hearing demos from the likes of Mark Broom and Slam. The idea is to not have any rules however the general sound is exciting, energetic raw techno. We are already 10 years old next year so I’ll be doing a nice release package as a celebration.
Your first album was “Bring a Friend” in 2012 on Soma Records. What has changed in the sound of Gary Beck from then?
Not too much actually! I still use all the same equipment in the studio however I always have new fresh ideas going on. I don’t want to stray too far away from ‘my sound’ as it works very well on the dance floor and it has an identity. It’s important not to lose that.
Your new LP “Dál Riata” will be out at the end of November. It’s been quite a long wait from 2012, is there a specific reason?
I had been releasing loads of EP’s over the last 5 years and I felt a new project was needed to keep me excited in the studio. I thoroughly enjoyed making the last one, so I thought why not? My dad was sharing some new artwork ideas at the time as well, so the moment felt perfect.
Listening to the preview of your new album, I found a quite varied spectrum of techno sounds, from real bangers and tracks made for the dance floor to more open and “unexpected” soundscapes. Is my description correct? How would you describe the sound of your new album?
Yes, that’s probably a decent description. I wanted to keep this one more dance floor orientated along with some other interesting little songs decorated around the bangers. The tracks are exactly the kind of tunes I’m feeling on a dance floor right now and I wanted to reflect that as much as possible in this album. There’s also a ‘Celtic’ feel around the album with the name/artwork and string work in some of the tracks such as ‘Dál Riata’ and ‘Absolute Gem’.
You have played in some of the best clubs and festivals around the world, is there a place where you haven’t played yet and would love to?
I still haven’t been to Mexico! That’s definitely on the list, also Iceland would be very cool.
You have played many times in Italy too, do you enjoy coming to our country? What you think of the crowd and the scene there more in general? Is there a party that you particularly enjoyed?
It’s up there with the best of them. I always really enjoy coming to Italy. Everything about the country is just class. The food, the people and the football! The crowd are always really up for a party and as a DJ, it’s a pleasure to play for them. I now have a lot of friends in Italy and I feel such a connection with them.
Is there any new name among Italian DJs or producers that particularly caught your attention?
I’ve heard some new stuff from Yhuman which is nice. He is working very hard and is now starting to see the results.
You have collaborated with some of the biggest names of techno, like Mark Broom or Speedy J. Is there anyone else you would love to collaborate with?
A collaboration with Jon Hopkins would be quite something!
What’s in the future of Gary Beck? Upcoming gigs and projects you want to share with us?
I have a bus load of new music I’m ready to unleash on the scene. I’m looking forward to sharing the music with everyone and I hope to continue playing the best clubs and festivals the world has to offer.
