Il duo musicale di fratelli egiziani Gawdat è diventato il volto della scena dei club egiziani, oltre ai set regolari in alcuni tra i più importanti paesi al mondo. Passo dopo passo stanno acquisendo popolarità, grazie al loro caratteristico suono tech house che riesce sempre a coinvolgere le platee internazionali. Oggi, vi presentiamo la nostra intervista con questi due artisti emergenti, sicuri che possano attirare l’attenzione delle nuove leve elettroniche con una serie di consigli tecnici molto utili. Ecco a voi i Gawdat!
Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti in Parkett! Come state? Vorremmo fare due chiacchiere con voi, ripercorrendo le tappe principali della vostra carriera. Come vi siete avvicinati al mondo della musica? Parlateci delle vostre origini.
Tutto è iniziato quando entrambi siamo stati molto ispirati dai suoni ed attratti dai ritmi della musica elettronica in tenera età. La nostra passione per la musica ha continuato a crescere e abbiamo continuato a studiare musica il più possibile. Sapevamo che questo era ciò che volevamo fare da grandi, anche se a quel tempo non sembrava molto realistico e forse era solo un nostro grande sogno irrealizzabile. Abbiamo iniziato suonando ai balli scolastici e alle feste in casa. Passavamo le nostre giornate ad ascoltare musica a casa, mostrandoci a vicenda stili e generi diversi che hanno contribuito a costruire il nostro stile e la nostra identità. Da allora continuiamo a cercare di ottenere il meglio dalla nostra più grande passione.
Più precisamente, cosa vi ha spinto ad avvicinarvi al mondo della notte permettendo alla vostra passione di diventare il vostro lavoro?
Quando suonare per le feste underground è diventato più costante coerente nelle sonorità, le persone hanno iniziato a spingerci a suonare sempre di più! Abbiamo deciso di entrare in un programma di DJ che si stava svolgendo in Egitto in quel periodo, intorno al 2012. Era un campo musicale completo a ElGouna, in Egitto con 30 da 400 Dj, dove tutti abbiamo avuto modo di suonare, imparare, fare corsi insieme. Il programma è stato giudicato da leggende come Aly & Fila e altri tutor, alla fine siamo arrivati in finale. Da quel momento in poi, sapevamo per certo che questo era ciò che avremmo perseguito per il resto della nostra vita.
In che modo pensi che le vostre origini possano aver influenzato il vostro sound? Ci sono suoni egiziani che vi hanno ispirato o siete stati ispirati da qualcos’altro?
Siamo stati ispirati da strumenti egiziani e arabi come Oud, Nay, batteria e percussioni. Abbiamo anche amato viaggiare molto per partecipare a feste e festival e incontrare tutti i tipi di persone. Ovunque andiamo siamo stati ispirati dalla cultura e dalla loro musica, quindi abbiamo acquisito molta istruzione ed esperienza quando si trattava di musica, questo da solo ci ha insegnato molto. Ci ha insegnato così tanto sul suono e sulla direzione che volevamo prendere e su ciò che sembrava più simile a noi. Quindi, che fosse l’Egitto a modo suo e il suo strumento principale o altri paesi e città, qualcosa ci è sempre stato aggiunto lungo la strada.
Avete qualche artista che è stato il cardine della vostra crescita? Come siete arrivati ad esibirvi su grandi palchi insieme ad alcuni dei principali nomi del panorama elettronico?
Per quanto riguarda la nostra crescita e il modo in cui siamo riusciti a suonare su grandi palchi con alcuni dei più grandi nomi del settore, tutto dipende da quanto duramente lavoriamo su noi stessi e sulla nostra musica. Quanto cerchiamo di essere coerenti, quanto lavoriamo sulle nostre abilità sociali e alla fine della giornata continuiamo a provare e fare del nostro meglio e tutto il resto va a posto. Ovviamente alcuni dei DJ con cui abbiamo suonato sono stati una fonte d’ispirazione per noi sin da quando eravamo molto giovani e avevano tutti una cosa in comune che era la determinazione.
Dal punto di vista della produzione musicale, quali sono i vostri progetti? Pubblicherete musica originale?
Abbiamo prodotto alcune nuove entusiasmanti tracce che condivideremo molto presto, abbiamo 4 nuovi originali e alcune modifiche che non mancano mai di far saltare in aria la pista da ballo.
Londra, Ibiza, Beirut… vi siete esibiti in così tante grandi città! Ma c’è un’esperienza particolare che conserverete sempre nel cuore? Forse quello in cui avete capito che il vostro sogno stava per realizzarsi.
Ci sono così tante esperienze che terremo nel nostro cuore, ogni esperienza è sembrata una nuova avventura…ma parte dello stesso viaggio. Ad esempio il nostro debutto al Sunwaves e.. .quando diciamo esperienza non intendiamo solo il nostro set o la festa stessa. È tutto, il viaggio nel suo insieme a partire dalla visita del paese, agli straordinari promotori e ospiti, al luogo stesso e, naturalmente, alla folla. Dopo ogni evento sembra che ci stiamo avvicinando sempre di più a tutto ciò che abbiamo sempre sognato e che sta diffondendo l’amore attraverso la nostra musica in tutto il mondo.
Per quanto riguarda gli artisti emergenti che vorrebbero crescere nel mondo della notte: quanto pensate sia importante il rapporto con i social network nel mondo di oggi?
Il social networking in questo tipo di campo è importante tanto quanto suonare musica. Sì, le persone ci conoscono dai nostri set. Il potere dei social media al giorno d’oggi consiste nel poter raggiungere un pubblico più ampio e anche per la forte connessione con molte persone in tutto il mondo.. attraverso la musica. La nostra missione è rendere sempre felice la giornata di qualcuno, quindi per noi essere in grado di farlo in tutto il mondo non ha prezzo.
Quanto è importante invece concentrarsi sulla propria impronta musicale? Cosa rende un artista unico dal vostro punto di vista?
Ogni artista ha il proprio modo di rappresentarsi, sia come persona che attraverso la propria musica. Avere un buon brand di te stesso gioca un ruolo importante per la carriera di un artista. Bisogna sapersi distinguere e il nostro è sempre stato dalla parte più felice, sia sul mixer che nella vita reale. Pensiamo che in questo modo puoi distinguere gli artisti, puoi descriverli meglio e saper dire quali siano i tuoi preferiti.
L’elettronica al servizio della tecnica: come vi piace preparare le performance dal vivo? C’è qualche attrezzatura che non può mancare dalla consolle durante un evento?
Normalmente non prepariamo i nostri set in anticipo e pensiamo che questo sia arrivato dopo aver suonato a lungo e aver saputo come va. Ovviamente discutiamo della direzione che vorremmo prendere e anche ciò che gioca un ruolo importante nelle nostre decisioni è lo slot delle prestazioni. Quello che di solito ci piace fare è andare presto prima dell’orario prestabilito, leggere la folla e avvicinarci sempre di più a loro lungo la strada e per tutto il set. Per quanto riguarda le cose di cui non possiamo fare a meno sono USBS, Cuffie, Pioneer RMX – 1000 che consideriamo il nostro parco giochi musicale.
L’anno scorso vi ha visto crescere molto… vi andrebbe di svelarci alcuni dei vostri prossimi passi? Magari una curiosità che non avete ancora detto pubblicamente…
Abbiamo della nuova musica in arrivo, non solo la produzione, ma anche alcuni fantastici mashup e set, un grande festival in cui non abbiamo mai suonato prima e alcuni articoli che ti daranno maggiori informazioni su di noi come DJ e su di noi come individui. Restate sintonizzati, sono sicuro che sentirete molto presto.

Egyptian brother musical duo Gawdat have become the face of the Egyptian club scene, as well as regular sets in some of the most important countries in the world. Step by step they are gaining popularity, thanks to their characteristic tech house sound that always manages to involve international audiences. Today we present our interview with these two emerging artists, confident that they can attract the attention of new electronic talents with a series of very useful technical advice. We present you the duo Gawdat!
Hi guys, welcome to Parkett! How are you? We would like to have a chat with you, retracing the main stages of your career. How did you first approach the world of music?
It all started when both us got very inspired by the sounds and got attracted to the beats of electronic music at a very young age. Our passion for music kept growing and we kept studying music as much as we can. we knew this is what we wanted to do when we grow up although it didn’t feel very realistic at that time and maybe just a big pipe dream of ours. We started off by playing at school proms and house parties. We spent our days listening to music at home, showing each other different styles and genres that helped build our style and identity. Since then we keep trying to get the best out of our biggest passion.
More precisely, what prompted you to approach the world of the night allowing your passion to become your job?
When playing for underground parties became more consistent and constant, people started pushing us towards playing more and more we decided to enter a Dj program that was happening in Egypt at that time, circa 2012. It was a full on music camp at ElGouna, Egypt with 30 from 400 Djs, where we all got to play, learn, take courses together. The program was judged by legends like Aly & Fila and other tutors, in the end we got to the final. From that moment on, we knew for sure that this is what we will be pursuing for the rest of our lives.
How do you think your origins may have influenced your sound? Are there any Egyptian sounds that have given you inspiration or have you been inspired by anything else?
We’ve been inspired by Egyptian and Arabian instruments like Oud, Nay, Drums and Percussions. We’ve also loved to travel a lot to attend parties and festivals and meet all kinds of people. Everywhere we go we got inspired by the culture and their music so we gained a lot of education and experience when it came to music, this alone taught us a lot. Taught us so much about the sound and direction we wanted to take and what felt more like us. So whether it was Egypt in its own way and its main instrument or other countries and cities, something was always added to us along the way.
Do you have any artists who have been the cornerstone for your growth? How did you come to perform on big stages together with some of the main names in the electronic panorama?
As for our growth and how we got to play on big stages with some of the biggest names in the industry, it all comes down to how hard we work on ourselves and our music. How consistent we try to be, how much we work on our social skills and at the end of the day we keep trying and doing our best and everything else just falls into place. Of course some of the DJs we played with have been an inspiration to us since we were very young and they all had one thing in common which was determination.
From the point of view of music production, what are your plans? Are you going to release original music?
We have produced some exciting new tracks that we will be sharing very soon, we have 4 new originals and some edits that never fail to blow up the dance floor.
London, Ibiza, Beirut… you performed in so many big cities! But is there a particular experience that you will always keep in your heart? Maybe the one in which you realized that your dream was about to come true.
There are so many experiences that we will keep in our heart, each experience felt like a new adventure but part of the same journey. For example our Sunwaves debut, and when we say experience we don’t just mean our set or the party itself. It’s everything, the trip as a whole starting from visiting the country, to the amazing promoters and hosts, the venue itself and of course the crowd. Every gig feels like we’re getting closer and closer to everything we’ve been dreaming of which is spreading the love through our music to the whole world.
Regarding the emerging artists who would like to grow in the world of the night: how important do you think is the relationship with social networks in today’s world?
Social networking in this kind of field is just as important as playing music. Yes people get to know us by our sets. The power of social media nowadays is that it helps us reach a wider target audience and also connect with a lot of people around the world through the music. Our mission is to always make someone’s day so for us to be able to do that around the world is priceless.
How important is it instead to focus on your own musical footprint? What makes an artist unique from your point of view?
Each artist has his/her own way of representing themselves, whether as a person or through their music. Branding yourself plays a big role for artists to stand out and ours has always been on the happier side while describing, whether on the mixer or in real life. We think that this way you can tell artists apart, you can describe them better and know to tell which ones are your favorites.
Electronics at the service of technique: how do you like to prepare your performances? Is there any equipment that cannot be missing from the console during an event?
We normally don’t prepare our sets beforehand and we think this came after a long time playing and knowing how it goes. Of course we discuss the direction we’d like to take and what also plays a big role in our decisions is the performance slot. What we usually like to do is to go early before our set time, read the crowd and get closer and closer to them along the way and throughout the set. As for things we can’t go without are the USBS, Headphones, Pioneer RMX – 1000 which we consider our musical playground.
Last year has seen you grow a lot.. would you like to reveal some of your next steps? Maybe a curiosity that you haven’t said publicly yet
We have some new music coming your way, not just production, but also some cool mashups and sets, a big festival we haven’t played in before and some articles that will give you more insight about us as DJs and us as individuals. Stay tuned, I’m sure you’ll hear very soon.
