RedazioneL’undicesimo capitolo della nostra serie di podcast Monthly Selection vede protagonista Masafumi Take, uno dei personaggi più riconosciuti dell’elettronica giapponese.
Masafumi Take è un Dj, compositore e produttore giapponese in pianta stabile a Tokyo. Essendo parte della scena techno orientale, ma estremamente affezionato alla scena occidentale, in particolar modo parte di quella italiana, è stato l’artista che abbiamo scelto per questo nuovo Internal Selection. Tra techno, deep e psychedelia abbiamo avuto modo di fargli qualche domanda per capire un po’ meglio alcuni aspetti della sua ricerca e produzione musicale.
Qual è stato l’approccio di Masafumi Take al mondo della musica elettronica e Djing? Chi può averti fortemente ispirato e com’è avvenuto il processo di produzione?
“Sono un DJ e Producer con sede a Tokyo, e tra le varie attività dirigo una label Katharsis Records con cui da breve abbiamo pubblicato il secondo EP nel mese di giugno. La nostra prossima release sarà in agosto, con release al Contact con Mike Parker e Feral come guest. La principale ragione per cui sono diventato DJ è stato l’incontro con le produzione di Autechre all’età di 19 anni, ne sono stato fortemente influenzato. Ho iniziato quindi ad ascoltare musica elettronica, techno e tutte le sue varie sfumature, allontanandomi dal mio background di stampo rock britannico. Attualmente mi sto dirigendo sulla produzione di tracce, o lavori, dalla techno fino all ‘ electro, trance e psichedelia”
Abbiamo visto che hai invitato diversi artisti italiani in Giappone, alcuni di questi erano Luigi Tozzi e PRC, mentre qui ti abbiamo visto collaborare con Invenis, com’è nato questo rapporto con l’Italia e la sua scena techno?
“Ammiro la delicatezza e accuratezza che i produttori italiani mostrano, ad esempio nell’utilizzo dei reverberi. Anche se molti non ho avuto modo d’incontrali di persona, ho voluto invitarne alcuni per qualche serata che ho organizzato qui in Giappone. Mi piace la serie Invens dove ho visto alcuni dei miei preferiti come Brand e Luigi, e ho registrato un podcast che essendogli piaciuto hanno poi pubblicato. Sento che mi piacciono i suoni delicati e profondi delle tracce italiane, ho visto che si adattano molto al gusto dei giapponesi, apprezzano questo tipo di sonorità, e sono sicuro che anche la presenza di Donato Dozzy al “ Labyrinth” sia una grande influenza.”
Hai in mente un artista in particolare che rifletta l’immagine del Dj o Producer? Quali sono le principali influenze che ti hanno portato a questo?
“DJ Nobu è il produttore che ammiro di più. Il suo DJing è fortemente basato su una profonda ricerca “strategica” e “variazioni” continue allo stesso tempo, adattando e portando il set in più atmosfere. Le sue tracce per di più sono uniche, mi colpiscono ogni volta che le ascolto. Ha trovato un fortissimo incoraggiamento e sviluppo il suo lavoro anche all’estero, quindi questo mi piace perché mi fa pensare che anche i Giapponesi possono dare un forte contributo in questo panorama musicale.”
Sei riconosciuto come uno dell’attuale generazione techno in Giappone. Quale ruolo svolge la tua musica lì, e perchè ti piace così tanto questa definizione?
“Dal momento che il flusso principale dei club giapponesi porta all’EDM per i giovani, penso che il mio ruolo sia quello di trasmettere la musica techno alle generazioni più giovani, collaborando anche con grandi DJ techno giapponesi. I giapponesi hanno delle buone abilità nel DJing, quindi se potessimo crescere sempre di più sarebbe molto bello; sarebbe incredibile se Katharsis Recordings diventasse una piattaforma di riferimento in futuro. Amo la scena techno giapponese, e la mia voglia di continuare a proporre techno in Giappone è davvero forte.”
Ti abbiamo visto suonare in diversi posti come Praga o Berlino, e presto ti vedremo a Tokyo per future release. Cosa ti aspetti di nuovo? Quali sono le cose che più ti porti dentro?
“I due posti in cui ho avuto modo di suonare in Czech non erano grandissimi, tuttavia è stata una bellissima esperienza e questo mi ha permesso di fare amicizia con più persone coinvolte nell’organizzazione, Mazhar’s house ad esempio, o degli eventi notturni della zona. La notte che ho suonato a Brno (Czech) è stata sicuramente una delle notti più soddisfacenti di tutto il mio tour in Europa. Tutto ciò è stata un’esperienza davvero grande e spero che a breve si possa organizzare un nuovo tour un po’ più lungo e in più nazioni EU; nel mentre mi sto organizzando con alcune demo e nuovi lavori per alcune etichette localizzate in occidente”

Masafumi Take is a japanese Dj, composer and producer that lives in Tokyo. He’s one of the members of the japan techno community, but he’s also strongly influenced by the occidental music scene. He’s the artist that we’ve decided to propose for this Internal Selection. Between techno, deep and psychedelic music we had the opportunity to talk with him about his research and in general about the strong passion for the music that comes from the other side the world.
Who is Masafumi Take and how does approach electronic music? Who inspired you? How did you approach to the Djing or production in general?
“I am a Tokyo based DJ/Composer and Producer, and I’ve run a label called Katharsis Recordings, we just have released our second EP in June. Our next party will be in August, at Contact with Mike Parker and Feral as our guest. The reason why I became a DJ is because I came across Autechre’s music when I was 19, and I was influenced by him. I started listening electro and techno music since then. I actually used to listen UK rock first though. Currently, I’m playing and producing wide range of techno from electro and left field, with psychedelic techno as a core.”
You have invited various Italian artists to Japan, including Luigi Tozzi and Claudio PRC. You also did a podcast for Invenis. What relationship do you have with Italy, italians and the Techno of our country?
“I admire Italian producers’ delicate track making and the use of reverbs. Although I hadn’t met them in person, I wanted to have them for my party in Japan. I had always enjoyed listening Invenis since it included my favorite artists’ mixes such as Brand and Luigi. I had a great set for a party. I did last year, so I sent it to them. They liked it and released it immediately. I feel that the delicate and deep sounds of Italian tracks fit the taste of Japanese who appreciate delicate sound, and I’m sure that Donato Dozzy appearing in Labyrinth is a great influence too.”
Do you have in mind a guru that respects the image of Dj or Artist in general? What are the main influences they have brought you into this world?
“DJ Nobu is the producer I admire most. His DJ is constructed by in-depth strategy and challenging at the same time, and also able to adapt to various atmospheres. His tracks also are unique, inspiring me every time I listen. His rapid advance overseas these recent years has taught me that we Japanese also can play a bigger role in the world.”
You are recognized among those of the current generation to take the mantle of Techno in Japan. What role does your music play in Japan and press you so much this definition?
“Since Japanese clubs’ main stream is EDM for young people, i think my role is to convey techno to the young generation, hooking up great Japanese techno DJs. Japanese have great skill in DJing, so if we can grow more track makers, it would be an appeal to the world, and it would be amazing if Katharsis Recordings could be a platform for that in the future. I love the Japanese techno scene, and my will to keep playing an active part in Japan is supporting me strongly.”
We’ve seen you live in many great places like Prague or Berlin and we’ll see you soon in other places. What do you expect again? What are the most beautiful things that bring you into your experiences? There’s anticipations that you can tell us?
“The two venues when I played in Czech were both not that too big, however, I stayed at the organizer Mazhar’s house, and we became very good friends. The night I played in Brno, Czech, came out to be a night with my best set in the whole EU tour. Tears were about to run down watching the perfectly and beautifully rocked floor, giving me confidence that my DJing will make it in EU too; so next year, I would like to stay in Europe more. Currently, I’ working on some demos for European labels.”
