RedazioneAbbiamo la fortuna e l’orgoglio di intervistare uno degli artisti che ci ha sempre appassionato molto musicalmente. Resident del Cocoricò e dell’Amnesia di Milano, Idriss D è l’artista col quale abbiamo deciso di scambiare quattro chiacchiere.
Com’è nata la tua passione per la musica elettronica?
Son sempre stato un grande fan della musica R’n’B fin dai suoi inizi, ed anche quando MTV ha iniziato a trasmetterla la seguivo sempre. Poi ho scoperto l’House Music, e lì ho capito che puoi suonare questa musica e far ballare le persone. Quando vivevo a Parigi, frequentavo la scena underground della città, che in quel periodo aveva un sacco di bravi artisti e feste ovunque. Oltre a questo, la musica del mio paese, l’Algeria, è sempre stata un grande inspirazione, e mi ha dato un’idea di cosa siano le mie origini.
Che generi prediligi nella creazione di un live set?
Mi piace creare un’atmosfera in cui sia io che le persone nel locale si possano perdere e ballare. Se io mi diverto, allora tutti si divertono. Suono musica che abbia un bello swing e una melodia accattivante, che ti prende, indipendentemente dal genere. Scelgo sempre tracce che non sono proprio classificabili, che non stanno in una certa categoria. Mi piace la musica senza tempo.
Quali label e artisti hanno influito maggiormente nel tuo stile e nelle tue sonorità?
Ho un gusto molto eclettico e la mia scelta musicale ne è una diretta conseguenza. Non do troppa importanza alle charts e alle Top10. Un artista può essere super indipendente o anche una mega star, è lo stesso. Se la sua musica è bella e sta bene nel mio set, la suono di sicuro.
Qual’è stata la tua uscita discografica più importante?
Tutto quello che ho fatto uscire su Memento è molto importante per me. La label mostra la mia crescita artistica e la mia direzione musicale. Se ascolti le mie tracce su Memento, ti fa un’idea di chi sia Idriss D.
Com’è nata l’idea di fondare la Memento Records?
Mancava qualcosa sulla scena italiana in quel periodo, e Memento è stata la prima label a sperimentare un certo suono, per poi crescere negli anni sempre restando underground e alternativa.
Cosa pensi del clubbing in italia e degli artisti italiani?
Lavoro con un gran gruppo di persone, e posso dire che la scena in Italia è in gran forma. Non dovremmo troppo guardare i locali di altre nazioni, l’Italia ha sua storia e la sua tradizione musicale, e sono convinto che abbia sempre avuto una grande scena.
Parlando delle tue esperienze lavorative quale Club italiano/estero ti ha dato più calore ed emozione nel suonare la tua musica?
Cocoricò e Guendalina sono tra i miei preferiti di sempre, e all’estero mi piace tantissimo suonare al Watergate a Berlino dove faccio gli showcase Memento.
Cosa consigli ai nuovi giovani artisti emergenti che intraprendono questo mondo?
Scegliete un percorso artistico e rimaneteci fedeli, non seguite l’ultimo trend.
Sei un ottimo manager di una grande agenzia di booking la db artist parlaci un pò di questa grande realtà del movimento clubbing italiano, come è nato questo progetto?
Tutto è iniziato mettendo in contatto i miei amici DJ che volevano suonare in Italia con i promoters locali. Pian piano è diventata un realtà di artisti che rappresento in tutto il paese.
Infine: quali i tuoi progetti o novità future?
Mi piacerebbe far diventare gli showcase Memento una festa da fare ogni mese in giro per l’Europa e pubblicare ancora più musica mia. Ho iniziato una serie di EP su Memento a mio nome, finora sono usciti Dib001 e Dib002, e voglio continuare con questo progetto.

How did your passion for electronic music?
I’ve always been a fan of the very early R’n’B records, and also when this music became more fashionable and MTV friendly I was really into it. House Music then came along, and that’s when I realized that you can actually play this for a crowd and make people dance. When I was living in Paris, I was hanging out in the underground scene of the city, which at that time had a lot of great artists and parties. On top of this, the music from my country, Algeria, shaped my taste and gave me a vision of where my roots come from.
What kinds do you prefer in the creation of a live set?
I really like to build an experience, for me and for the people on the dancefloor. If I have fun, everyone is having fun. I basically love playing music that has a good swing and a catchy melody, whatever genre it is. I always choose tracks that transcend categories and names. I like to play timeless music.
What label and artists have the greatest impact in your style and in your sound?
Well, I’m very eclectic and my selection grows accordingly. I don’t necessarily look at charts or Top 10s. An artist can be super independent or a mega star, it’s the same for me. If the vibe of his/her music is great, and it fits my set, I just got for it.
What was your record release more important?
Anything I released on Memento is super important for me. The label shows my artistic growth and my vision. If you listen to my records on that label, you get an idea of who Idriss D is.
How did the idea of founding the Memento Records?
There was something missing on the Italian scene at that time, and Memento was the first label to champion a specific sound. The label grew throughout the years, always keeping a focus on the alternative and the more underground.
What do you think of clubbing in Italy and of Italian artists?
I have a great group of people I work with, and with them I can say that the scene is pretty healthy. We shouldn’t be really looking at other countries, Italy has its own history and everything, but I believe it has always had an amazing party life.
Speaking of your work experience as Italian Club / abroad gave you more warmth and emotion play in your music?
In Italy Cocoricò and Guendalina have always been my top spots, while abroad I’m always happy to play at Watergate in Berlin where I do my Memento showcases.
What advice to new young artists who undertake this world?
Choose a path and stick to it, don’t go with the latest trend.
Are you a good manager of a large booking agency the db artist tell us a little bit of this great reality of Italian clubbing movement, how did this project ??
It started as a way of connecting some DJ friends of mine with the promoters I know in Italy. Slowly, it became a hub of artists that I represent on the country.
Finally: what are your plans or future developments?
Making the Memento showcases a monthly event and releasing more music from myself on the label. I started a series of EPs under my name, so far I released Dib001 and Dib002, so I plan on going on with it.
