RedazioneAbbiamo fatto due chiacchiere con un artista molto interessante: Goossen Sammy aka Sierra Sam. Domani sera (sabato 12 marzo) si esibirà al This is Not di Varese. Scopriamo nel dettaglio i suoi gusti, le sue passioni e alcune particolarità sulla sua carriera.

Oltre a sviluppare live sets da solista, il 2015 ti ha riservato degli shows spettacolari anche con Kink. Dove nasce la simbiosi on stage?
Strahilk ed io siamo molto amici e anche molto nerds. E’ stata un’idea di Robin Drimalski (booker del watergate) di farci suonare insieme. Abbiamo così deciso di costruire un live e fare una jam insieme davanti a un bel po’ di persone. È stato uno spasso.
Ascoltando i tuoi dischi, si nota molta influenza electro, Specialmente all’inizio della tua carriera da produttore. Man mano evolvi fino ad entrare in stili come house, Detroit, acid & techno. Cosa ti fa essere cosi dinamico come artista?
Mi piacciono molti generi musicali, tra i quali electro e techno sono i miei preferiti. Cerco sempre di diversificare e di non annoiare (prima di tutto di non annoiarmi in studio). Vado pazzo a suonare synths & drumboxes, normalmente non ho una scaletta da seguire quando sono in studio, mi lascio andare e quello che emerge può essere electro, acid, techno…non mi limito.
Che tipo di approccio hai alle cosi dette ‘machines’? Ti spingi a conoscerle fino in fondo? Oppure ti soffermi solo alle funzioni che ti interessano per il tuo live?
Vado fino in fondo quando si tratta di studiare uno strumento. Lo faccio da davvero molto tempo adesso. Quindi credo di essere abbastanza veloce ad apprendere nuove macchine e le loro funzionalità. Leggo molti manuali e naturalmente compro molti strumenti a seconda di quello che voglio sviluppare.
Uno dei tuoi ultimi dischi e’ uscito sotto il nome CYRK? Di cosa si tratta? Su che onda si focalizza?
CYRK è un duo project formato da me e Pascal Hetzel. Passiamo molto tempo in studio producendo musica e l’anno scorso ci hanno offerto di suonare live a Mosca, quindi abbiamo sviluppato un live set e nel frattempo producevamo nuove tracce. Poi, abbiamo trovato il nome e deciso di cominciare una label in modo da fare releases come e quando volevamo.
Sei sempre molto attivo, forse più di altri live performers. Che progetti futuri ci sono con Kink?
Ho ancora moltissimo materiale su cui lavorare come Solo artist (sto cercando di creare un album), ma il mio main focus ora è anche CYRK con Pascal. Amiamo suonare insieme, fare musica e viaggiare.

Besides developing live set as solo artist (sierra sam), you also played with Kink in a quiet few important spots during 2015. Where does the symbiosis born between you and him?
Strahil and I are good friends and nerds, it was Robin Drimalski (booker from Watergate) who had the idea of that reunion, we decided to bring some boxes together and try jam in front of an audience. It was a lot of fun.
By listening to your past/previous releases we noticed a solid electro influence, especially at the beginning of your carrier. The more you release the more you entering the world of house, Acid, Detroit, Chicago & techno. What makes you so dynamic as an artist & producer?
I love a lot of styles, electro and techno are my favourite. I always try to be diverse and not be boring (first of all not bore myself in the studio). I like to play with synths and drumboxes, usually I don’t really have a plan when I enter the studio, I let myself go and it can be electro, techno, acid… I don’t put limits to myself.
What kind of approach you have with the “machines”? do you push yourself to get to know the machine in all its functions? Or do you just learn its functions based on what you eed to develop with your live set?
I try to go deep with the machines, I´ve been doing this for long enough now, so I think I am fast with learning. I read manuals (if it is what you want to know 😉 ). I of course buy equipment according to the sound I like or want to develop.
One of your last release came out under the allias “Cyrk”. What is it exactly? What kind of principles (music genre) Cyrk focuses on?
CYRK is a duo we started together with my partner Pascal Hetzel. We are doing a lot of music together and we had an offer to play live in Moscow as a duo last summer, so we developed a live set and we made new tracks, then we found a name for the project and we decided to start a label so we could put out what we want when we want.
Your are always very active as a live acts, most probably more than any other live acts around at this time. What projects does Sierra Sam has on the table right now?
I am still working a lot on solo material ( trying to put an album together), but my main focus is CYRK as we love to play together, travel together, make music together. It is more fun than alone.
