Giovanni PapiniOlympe non frena la sua scalata alla cima dell’elettronica mondiale, con set accattivanti che trasportano il pubblico in nuovi regni sensoriali e produzioni che esplorano il lato misterioso della melodia. La producer italiana è stata nostra ospite.
Olympe, data la grande passione per la mitologia greca: è questo il nome scelto da Laura, produttrice italiana nata a Parma, che vede l’inizio della sua carriera al pianoforte, per poi esplorare una vasta gamma di generi.
Un cammino che l’ha forgiata nel tempo, dando vita a uno stile che miscela deep tech, indie dance e melodic techno. Sono passati diversi anni da quando nel 2018 Olympe ha fatto i primi passi nel mondo del clubbing di Milano, per poi arrivare già tre anni più tardi, nel 2021, sugli stage di Afterlife, Awakenings, DGTL, Tomorrowland e ZAMNA.
Il brano di debutto, ‘In the Darkness’, viene rilasciato da Afterlife nel VA ‘Unity Pt. 3’ del 2022, e pochi mesi dopo Olympe partecipa a ‘X2’, altro VA, questa volta di Just This, etichetta degli Hunter/Game, con ‘Frustration’.
Queste due prime tracce sono già identificative dello stile di Olympe: colori scuri che si illuminano in progressione, suoni originali, vocalità femminili e nel complesso appartenenti a quel settore melodico più cupo e misterioso.
Anno successivo, altro giro, altro VA, perché compare in un’altra selezione di Afterflife: ’Realm of Consciousness VI’ con ‘The Dreamer’, insieme ad Hunter/Game, Øostil e Luvi.
Nel 2024, per ora, solo una pubblicazione, ‘I Don’t Wanna Talk’ su Tomorrowland Music per il VA ‘Rise V.1’, del 19 aprile: un esempio della sua energia contagiosa, con un groove nuovo e fresco. Un’altra pietra miliare nella scalata di Olympe.
Sottolineiamo per ora, perché tra le altre, Olympe ci ha parlato anche del suo primo EP, in arrivo tra pochissimo. L’intervista.
Ciao Laura, grazie per il tuo tempo e benvenuta su Parkett. Inizio chiedendoti come sta andando il 2024 per te. Ti aspettavi un anno così ricco?
Grazie a voi per l’invito! Sono contentissima, questo 2024 mi sta regalando momenti magici su momenti magici e non posso che esserne grata. Sì, ho cercato sempre di visualizzare un 2024 così.
Ho letto che hai una grande passione per il cinema, e che prima avresti voluto fare la regista. Parlaci di questo tuo interesse, come è nato? Se ti chiedessero di produrre musica per il cinema, cosa ne penseresti?
Esatto, il cinema è un mio fedele compagno da quando sono piccola. Credo sia in gran parte merito di mia madre. Già ai tempi delle elementari non vedevo l’ora che arrivasse sera per guardare un film insieme a lei per poi commentarlo. Vivevamo avventure diverse ogni notte. Riguardo al produrre musica per il cinema assolutamente sì, arriverà ma più avanti.
Per creare la tua musica prendi ispirazione anche da questo settore? Da che altro attingi per realizzare i tuoi progetti?
Sì, prendo grande ispirazione dal cinema, non solo dalle colonne sonore ma anche dalle emozioni che certe scene trasmettono e in cui io mi riconosco. Attingo tanto anche dall’energia di un momento, delle persone che incontro viaggiando o di una musica sentita per strada per esempio.
Fuori dallo studio di registrazione e lontano dalla console, chi è Laura?
Quando sono in studio o in console do tutta me stessa e trasmetto in maniera molto naturale il mio essere, quindi al di fuori Laura non è lontana da Olympe. Cerco di dedicare più tempo che posso a me stessa tra sport e meditazione e adoro assistere con amici a esibizioni d’arte.
Sabato 13 aprile, Parigi, La Défense Arena: eri tra i protagonisti della line up di Afterlife per la prima volta nella capitale francese. Che emozioni ti ha trasmesso? Raccontaci questo evento dal tuo punto di vista.
È stato senza dubbio uno dei momenti più belli della mia vita. Amo Parigi e il pubblico francese, mi danno sempre molta carica, e suonare per Afterlife davanti a 40 mila persone è stato davvero un sogno diventato realtà. Sono un’anima da grandi palchi, quindi sentire così tante persone connesse con me mi ha dato tanta gioia e adrenalina. Bellissimo anche aver potuto fare esperienza dei set di tutti gli altri artisti della line up e vedere uno stadio immenso pieno di vita.

Negli eventi di tutto il mondo è ormai assodata la presenza di visuals su enormi schermi che hanno trasformato l’esperienza degli appuntamenti live. Qual è il tuo pensiero a riguardo?
Da amante del cinema non posso che apprezzare questo miracolo della tecnologia, l’importante è che ognuno abbia il proprio stile.
Rimanendo sempre nella corrente Afterlife, due anni fa circa uscivi in Unity, Pt. 3 con ‘In The Darkness’, un sound cupo ma etereo, a mio parere uno dei pezzi migliori di quel VA. Ma come è nata questa traccia? Cosa volevi trasmettere? Eri al debutto all’epoca, e quel brano è stato un biglietto da visita molto potente.
Ho prodotto ‘In The Darkness’ quando facevo l’Abbey Road ad Amsterdam e producevo da un anno e mezzo. Era il periodo subito dopo il covid e volevo creare una traccia che desse speranza, che parlasse di reagire ai momenti bui e di trarre forza e insegnamento da essi. È un brano a cui sono molto affezionata, mi ha aperto tante opportunità.
Per adesso conti presenze su diversi various artist, ultimo in ordine di tempo Rise Vol.1 con ‘I Don’t Wanna Talk’ per Tomorrowland Music. Quando vedremo il primo EP?
Il mio primo Ep uscirà il 19 luglio: state pronti, io non vedo veramente l’ora! È parte dei miei set da un po’ e sono molto contenta della risposta del pubblico.
Se potessi “rubare” qualcosa a un artista che ammiri cosa ruberesti? E chi sarebbe?
Ruberei sicuramente a Four Tet la capacità di essere timeless.
E se potessi tornare indietro, cosa diresti alla Laura del passato? Cambieresti qualcosa?
Le direi di stare tranquilla che tutto andrà come deve andare.
Siamo arrivati alla fine, e ringraziandoti ti chiedo: qual è il sogno per Olympe?
Il sogno per Olympe è di non smettere mai di sognare.

Olympe does not slow down her climb to the top of the electronic world, with captivating sets that transport the audience to new sensory realms and productions that explore the mysterious side of melody. The Italian producer was our guest.
Olympe, for her great passion for Greek mythology: this is the name chosen by Laura, an Italian producer born in Parma, who began her career at the piano, before exploring a wide range of genres.
A path that has forged her over time, giving life to a style that mixes deep tech, indie dance and melodic techno. It has been several years since Olympe took her first steps into the world of clubbing in Milan in 2018, before arriving already three years later, in 2021, on the stages of Afterlife, Awakenings, DGTL, Tomorrowland and ZAMNA.
The debut track, ‘In the Darkness‘, is released by Afterlife in the 2022 VA ‘Unity Pt. 3‘, and a few months later Olympe participates in ‘X2‘, another VA, this time on Just This, Hunter/Game‘s label, with ‘Frustration‘.
These first two tracks are already identifying Olympe’s style: dark colours that light up in progression, original sounds, female vocals and overall belonging to that darker and more mysterious melodic sector.
Next year, another tour, another VA, because she appears in another Afterflife selection: ‘Realm of Consciousness VI‘ with ‘The Dreamer‘, together with Hunter/Game, Øostil and Luvi.
In 2024, so far, only one release, ‘I Don’t Wanna Talk‘ on Tomorrowland Music for VA ‘Rise V.1‘, on 19 April: an example of his infectious energy, with a fresh, new groove. Another milestone in Olympe’s climb.

Hi Laura, thanks for your time and welcome to Parkett. I’ll start by asking you how 2024 is going for you. Did you expect such a rich year?
Thank you for the invitation! I’m delighted, this 2024 is giving me magical moment after magical moment and I can only be thankful for that. Yes, I have always tried to visualise a 2024 like this.
I read that you have a great passion for cinema, and that you wanted to be a filmmaker first. Tell us about this interest of yours, how did it come about? If you were asked to produce music for cinema, what would you think?
That’s right, cinema has been a faithful companion of mine since I was little. I think it is largely thanks to my mother. Even in my primary school days, I couldn’t wait until the evening to watch a film with her and then comment on it. We had different adventures every night. Regarding producing music for films absolutely yes, it will come but later.
Do you also take inspiration from this area to create your music? What else do you draw on to realise your projects? How important is artistic contamination for you?
Yes, I take a lot of inspiration from cinema, not only from soundtracks but also from the emotions that certain scenes convey and in which I recognise myself. I also draw a lot from the energy of a moment, from people I meet while travelling or from music I hear in the street for example.
Outside the recording studio and away from the console, who is Laura?
When I’m in the studio or on the console I give it my all and transmit my being in a very natural way, so outside Laura is not far from Olympe. I try to dedicate as much time as I can to myself between sports and meditation and I love attending art exhibitions with friends.
Saturday 13 April, Paris, La Défense Arena: you were one of the stars of the Afterlife line-up for the first time in the French capital. What emotions did it convey to you? Tell us about this event from your point of view.
It was without a doubt one of the best moments of my life. I love Paris and the French audience, they always give me a lot of energy, and playing for Afterlife in front of 40,000 people was really a dream come true. I am a big stage soul, so to hear so many people connected with me gave me so much joy and adrenaline. It was also great to experience the sets of all the other artists in the line-up and to see a huge stadium full of life.
At events all over the world, the presence of visuals on huge screens has transformed the experience of live events. What are your thoughts on this?
As a movie lover I can only appreciate this miracle of technology, the important thing is that everyone has their own style.
Staying in the Afterlife current, about two years ago you came out on Unity, Pt. 3 with ‘In The Darkness’, a dark but ethereal sound, in my opinion one of the best tracks from that VA. But how did this track come about? What did you want to convey?You were making your debut at the time, and that track was a very powerful calling card.
I produced ‘In The Darkness’ when I was doing Abbey Road in Amsterdam and had been producing for a year and a half. It was the period right after the covid and I wanted to create a track that gave hope, that talked about reacting to dark times and drawing strength and lessons from them. It is a track I am very fond of, it has opened up so many opportunities for me.
For now you count appearances on various artists, most recently Rise Vol.1 with ‘I Don’t Wanna Talk’ for Tomorrowland Music.When will we see the first EP?
My first EP will be out on 19 July: be ready, I’m really looking forward to it!It’s been part of my sets for a while now and I’m really happy with the response from the audience.
If you could “steal” something from an artist you admire what would it be?And who would it be?
I would definitely steal Four Tet’s ability to be timeless.
And if you could go back, what would you say to Laura from the past? Would you change anything?
I would tell her to rest assured that everything will turn out as it should.
