Lorenzo GiudiceLayton Giordani ci ha concesso un po’ del suo tempo per una chiacchierata, in occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo singolo “Act Of God”.
Esistono poche certezze in un mondo fluido come quello della musica elettronica. Layton Giordani, nelle sue molteplici sfaccettature, NON è una di queste.
Lo diciamo un po’ provocatoriamente, perché il DJ e produttore newyorkese ha fatto del “cambiare pelle” il suo marchio di fabbrica. Forse è questa la sua vera carta vincente: rimanere comunque fedele a se stesso.
Sì, perché come ci ha spiegato e come avrete modo di leggere anche voi, Layton nasce come un artista techno, di quella più dura di scuola europea, e conserva la durezza delle ritmiche anche nei momenti in cui le sue facce assumono altri colori.
“Act Of God” si avvale delle celestiali voci di Linney e Sarah De Warren, ed è un inno alla musica progressive: ritmo che ammicca alle sonorità Anyma, unite ad una parte vocale sensuale ma, al contempo, perentoria.
Menzione speciale a John Summit, l’UK wonder boy che con la sua etichetta “Experts Only” ha scelto di ospitare un prodotto che sicuramente farà parlare di sé.

Ciao Layton e benvenuto su Parkett Channel. Grazie per il tuo tempo. Inizio con una domanda personale: chi sei? Intendo dire, chi è Layton Giordani prima di diventare Layton Giordani, il DJ e Produttore?
Solo un ragazzo di New York con la passione per la musica da quando aveva 13 anni. è tutto quello che so. E poi, amo anche le macchine veloci :).
Come è iniziato il tuo viaggio musicale?
Quando avevo 13 anni, i miei amici ed io andavamo in questi “teen party” a New York, dove gli organizzatori ingaggiavano DJs a suonare. Lì ho scoperto la musica elettronica
Quale o quando è stato il momento in cui il fiore della musica è sbocciato in te?
Quando Adam Beyer ha firmato una mia traccia a 20 anni. La mia vita è cambiata molto velocemente, è stato folle.
Sei stato definito come “uno dei più popolari punti di riferimento per la nuova scuola techno. Che cosa ne pensi della tendenza modrna ad etichettare i generi musicali?
Penso che etichettare i generi musicali sia una cosa vecchia. Dovremmo semplicemente tornare indietro a chiamarla musica elettronica. Nessuno pensa ai generi ormai, e non mi piace limitare un genere in una scatola di “nuova musica” oggi. A meno che, non ci sia una ragione molto forte per etichettare una canzone con un particolare genere.
Hai iniziato come artista techno, ma questo singolo è un componimento vocal, più lento e che si lega più agli elementi della progressive house piuttosto che alla Techno. Cosa ti ha guidato mentre producevi “Act Of God”?
Sono ossessionato dallo scrivere musica che vada oltre ritmi e beat veloci. Ci sono molti lati di Layton e penso che sia arrivato finalmente il momento di mostrare a tutti quanto io sia versatile musicalmente, dentro di me. Non mi fraintendente, comunque. Le “bombe” techno saranno anche loro sempre presenti.
Le parole del singolo sono molto potenti “il ritmo è un opera di Dio”. Puoi approfondirci un po’ il significato della canzone?
Penso che significhi esattamente quello che significa. Il ritmo e la musica sono come droghe. L’immagine è potente, e appartiene ad un altro mondo, come un’opera di Dio. Che c’è di più potente di paragonare la musica a Dio!
Non sei nuovo alle sperimentazioni musicali. “Phantom”, ad esempio, è pieno di elementi uplifting trance. Al contrario, “Digital Age” è una pura hit techno in stile Drumcode. Quanto pensi sia importante sperimentare per un artista oggi?
La sperimentazione è dove nascono i veri artisti. L’imitazione è piattume, ma se vuoi distinguerti e diventare veramente te stesso, devi lasciarti andare, scrivere quello che senti, e rischiare di “essere diverso”….completamente te stesso.
Parlando della scena moderna, quant’è difficile “rimanere originale” in un mondo pieno di copie e suoni pre-campionati?
Penso che tu possa riusare suoni fintantoché metti te stesso nella musica. Non riesco a dirti quante volte sono stato ispirato da qualcosa che ho sentito e ho usato quell’ispirazione per iniziare a scrivere una mia traccia
Pensi ci sia un “fattore chiave” oggi che possa guidare qualcuno a diventare un punto di riferimento nel mondo della musica elettronica come te?
Una sola parola: costanza. Devi essere costante e credere in te stesso. Il tempo è tutto e se lasci che passi senza lavorare sulla musica, non sarai costante Condividi la tua musica con il mondo e definisci per te cosa vuol dire “essere pronta” una traccia.
Dove possiamo aspettarci di vedere Layton Giordani nei prossimi tempi? Dove potremo aspettarci di vederti suonare?
Sto suonando in tutto il mondo ultimamente. Argentina, USA, Ibiza, un sacco di posti! Sono emozionato verso tutti questi luoghi onestamente. Non sto più nella pelle!
Ultima, ma non meno importante, domanda: qual è il suggerimento che daresti all’alieno di prima, che ha guidato tra le galassie per produrre musica elettronica sulla Terra?
Sei già avanti rispetto a tutti perché nessuno è te stesso. Quindi produci quel che sei e quello che senti. Suonerà estremamente diverso rispetto tutti gli altri. E poi…divertiti mentre viaggi. Sarà folle!

There are few certainties in a world as fluid as the world of electronic music. Layton Giordani, in his many facets, is NOT one of them.
We say this somewhat provocatively, because the New York DJ and producer has made “changing faces” his trademark, but above all, and perhaps this is his real trump card, he still remains true to himself.
Yes, because as he explained and as you will also read, Layton was born as a techno artist, of the harder European school kind, and he retains the hardness of the rhythms even in the moments when his faces take on other colors.
“Act Of God” makes use of the heavenly vocals of Linney and Sarah De Warren, and is an ode to progressive music: rhythm that winks at Anyma sounds, combined with a sensual but, at the same time, peremptory vocal part.

Hi Layton and welcome on Parkett Channel. Thank you for your time. I’ll start with a “personal question”: who are you? I mean, who is Layton before becoming Layton Giordani, the DJ and producer?
Just a kid from New York with a passion for music ever since I was 13 years old. It’s all I’ve ever really known. I also love fast cars 🙂
How did you start your musical journey?
When I was 13, my friends and I would go out in NYC to these “teen parties” where they hired DJs to perform. That’s where I discovered electronic music.
What or when was the moment when the flower of music blossomed in you?
When Adam Beyer signed me at 20 years old. It was crazy and my life changed pretty fast.
You were defined as “one of the most popular tastemakers of techno’s new school”. What do you think of the modern way of labelling musical genres?
I think labeling music genres is getting quite old. It should just go back to being called electronic music. Nobody cares about genres anymore, and I really dislike conforming a sound into a box on new music these days…unless there’s a really strong reason for it to be categorized.
You started as a techno artist, whereas in this new single we can spot a slowed down, vocal driven composition that links itself more with the progressive house elements rather than techno ones. What drove you when you produced “Act Of God”?
I have become obsessed with writing music that goes further than just fast beats and rhythms. There are many sides to Layton and I feel like it’s finally time to show everyone how musically versatile I really am inside. Don’t get me wrong though–the techno bangers will always be there as well.
The lyrics state a powerful quote: “rhythm is an act of God”. Could you dive more in the meaning of the song?
I think it just really means what it says. Rhythm and music are like drugs. It’s powerful, and for lack of another word, like an act of god. What’s more powerful than comparing music to god!
You are no stranger to experiment in music. “Phantom”, as an example, is full of uplifting trance elements. On the contrary, “Digital Age” is a pure techno bliss in Drumcode style. How much do you think experimenting is important for an artist nowdays?
Experimenting is where true artists are created. Imitation is flattery but if you want to stand out and become yourself fully, you have to just let go, write what you feel, and dare to be different…completely yourself.
Speaking of the modern scene, how difficult is to “stay original” in a world full of copycats and pre-sampled sounds?
I think you can reuse sounds as long as you can put yourself in the music. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been inspired by something I’ve heard and used that as a starting point to write one of my own hits.
Do you think there is a “key factor” nowadays that can lead you to be a main stable of electronic music as you are?
One word… consistency. You have to be consistent and believe in yourself. Time is everything and if you let time fly by without working on music, you won’t stay consistent. Share your music with the world, and redefine for yourself what it means for a piece to be “ready”.
What can we expect from Layton Giordani in the upcoming times? Where can we see you perform live?
I am playing all over the world nowadays. Argentina, the USA, Ibiza, so many places! I’m excited to go to them all to be honest. I can’t wait!
And last, but not least, what is the best suggestion you would give to the alien aforementioned, that drove the whole galaxies to produce electronic music on Earth?
You’re already ahead of the game because you’re so different and nobody can be you. So just make what you are and what you feel. It will sound extremely different to everybody else. Also… have fun in the process 🙂 it’s a wild ride!
