RedazioneLewis Fautzi (vero nome Luis Gonçalves) è un ragazzo di poche parole, ma come spesso accade per i migliori talenti, la sua arte parla per lui.
Arte che è musica, ovviamente: techno che è stata descritta come “cosmica, ipnotica e cinematica” e che qualcuno chiamato Jeff Mills ha scelto e suonato in uno dei suoi set. Musica che lo ha reso il portoghese più famoso della techno: l’artista è così legato al suo Paese da non volerlo davvero abbandonare, come ci ha raccontato.
Abbiamo seguito questo ragazzo fin dall’inizio della sua carriera, quando lo intervistammo nel 2014 ai tempi dell’uscita del suo “The Gare Album”, primo LP il cui nome era ispirato al leggendario club di Porto dove tutto ebbe inizio. Dopo soli quattro anni, sono successe molte cose nella carriera di Fautzi, anche se lui ci ha rivelato di essere sempre lo stesso, instancabile gran lavoratore.
Tra i tanti traguardi raggiunti, entrare a far parte di Pole Group, un gruppo che l’artista definisce “famiglia”, è sicuramente uno dei più notevoli. Dopo un primo EP, “Blood”, nel 2015 e l’album di sapore più sperimentale “Ascension of Mind” del 2017, entrambi usciti sulla celebre etichetta di Oscar Mulero, è ora la volta di “Unknown Landscapes Vol.6”.
La sesta uscita della famosa serie di CD si compone di 22 tracce selezionate e mixate da Lewis Fautzi. Dal suo lavoro, in uscita il 16 novembre, Parkett presenta in anteprima “Induced Paralysis” di Kwartz, un altro giovane talento parte della compagine spagnola più famosa del panorama techno. Ciao Luìs e benvenuto su Parkett. Abbiamo avuto il piacere di intervistarti nel 2014 e possiamo dire che molte cose sono cambiate nella tua carriera da allora. Diresti che anche il tuo suono è cambiato?
Si, eccoci di nuovo qui! Non credo che la mia musica sia cambiata: io continuo ad essere me stesso, posso aver esplorato nuove strade, ma sempre con lo stesso obiettivo.
Sei sicuramente uno, se non addirittura il più famoso portoghese della scena techno. Vivi ancora in Portogallo? Come descriveresti la scena nel tuo Paese?
Si, vivo ancora in Portogallo e penso che ci rimarrò per sempre: amo il mio Paese e non voglio trasferirmi da nessun’altra parte. La scena portoghese è cresciuta molto negli ultimi anni e mi fa davvero piacere vederlo.
Sei conosciuto per essere un gran lavoratore ed un artista che spende la quasi totalità della sua giornata in studio. Hai mai avuto la sensazione di dover dimostrare qualcosa più degli altri, considerata la tua giovane età e il tuo rapido successo?
Io continuo a lavorare duro e non penso di aver avuto un rapido successo: quello a cui voglio arrivare è ancora lontano. Non penso di dover dimostrare niente a nessuno, l’ho già fatto ed ora devo solo continuare nella traiettoria del buon lavoro che ho impostato.
Cosa ti ispira quando produci?
I luoghi, lo spazio ed i paesaggi. Sono anche fortemente ispirato ogni volta che suono con successo da qualche parte.
Come ti senti a far parte di un gruppo di artisti quale quello di Pole Group? Quale pensi sia il punto di forza dell’etichetta?
Essere parte di Pole Group mi rende molto felice, è come essere in famiglia e questo è molto importante per me. L’etichetta ed il gruppo sono fortissimi e sono orgoglioso di esserne parte.
Se dovessi usare una sola parola per descrivere il suono di Pole Group, quale sceglieresti?
Unico.
Parliamo di “Unknown Landscapes vol.6”, un altro importante traguardo e riconoscimento del tuo ruolo come artista all’interno della label. Puoi raccontarci qualcosa del processo di selezione degli artisti e del mix?
Beh, diciamo che non è stato un processo veloce. Ho selezionato alcuni artisti che mi piacciono ed ho ricevuto le loro tracce, ma sfortunatamente non tutti hanno potuto inviare il loro materiale in tempo per la release. E’ stato praticamente impossibile avere tutti i nomi che mi piacciono su un solo CD. Sono molto felice di essere stato invitato per “Unknown Landscapes vol.6”, poichè significa che il mio lavoro è di qualità ed ha il suo valore.
Le tue tracce sono state suonate da Jeff Mills, qualcosa di assolutamente lusinghiero per qualsiasi artista. Jeff Mills ha detto in una recente intervista che la techno parla, oggi più che mai, “dello spazio e degli universi”. La tua musica è spesso stata definita cosmica, ipnotica e cinematica. A tuo parere, perchè così tanti artisti techno sono affascinati dallo spazio?
Lo spazio è molto affascinante, c’è così tanto ancora da scoprire. A me affascina l’idea di fare musica ed immaginare cosa accade in questi universi.
Hai dimostrato un eccezionale talento nell’esplorare anche le sfumature più delicate e sperimentali della techno, soprattutto con “Space Exploration”. Ti vedremo mai fare o suonare ambient?
Sì, ho un nuovo album che uscirà nel 2019. Voglio proprio esplorare quest’area perchè mi affascina molto, magari un giorno farò una performance audio-visuale.
Hai suonato in alcuni dei migliori club del mondo, c’è un posto dove non sei stato ancora e vorresti suonare?
Direi che è normale che io non abbia fatto ancora tutto quello che vorrei, ma sono certo che succederà in futuro.
Prossimi progetti di cui vuoi parlarci?
Uscirà all’inizio del 2019 il mio nuovo album sulla mia etichetta Faut Section ed un EP su Soma Records ad Aprile. Ci sono tante altre cose in cantiere, ma preferisco non dire ancora nulla.

Lewis Fautzi (real name Luis Gonçalves) is a man of few words but, as often happens with the best talents, his art speaks for himself.
Art that is music obviously: techno that has been described as “cosmic, hypnotic, cinematic” and that someone named Jeff Mills chose to play in one of his sets. Music that made him the most famous techno artist from Portugal, a country “that he loves” and doesn’t want to leave.
We have been following this guy from the very beginning and we interviewed him in 2014 at the time of “The Gare Album”, his first LP taking its name from the club in Porto where his career took off.
Four years later, many things have happened in Fautzi’s artistic path, but the hard worker and focused DJ and producer doesn’t seem to have changed much, as he reveals in this second interview for Parkett.
Among his many milestones, being part of Pole Group is surely one of the most outstanding: a group of artists that “feels like family”, as he told us. After releasing his first EP, “Blood”, in 2015 and the experimental album “Ascension of Mind” in 2017 on Oscar Mulero’s label, Fautzi now mixes “Unknown Landscapes Vol.6”, out on the 16th November.

Hi Luìs, we had the pleasure of interviewing you back in 2014 and it looks like many things have changed in your career as musician since then. Would you say that your sound has changed too?
Yes, here we are again! It doesn’t seem to me that my music has changed. I continue to be myself, I may have explored other ways, but always with the same goal.
You are surely one, if not the most upfront Portuguese name of techno. Do you still live in Portugal? How would you describe the scene there?
Yes. I still live in Portugal and I think I will stay here forever. I really like my country and I don’t see why moving to other places. The scene in Portugal has been growing a lot in the last few years and I am enjoying watching it.
You are known for being a hard worker and a person who spends almost much of his time in the studio. Did you ever feel like you had to prove something more than others, considering your young age and your quick success?
Yes, I continue to work hard. I don’t think I really had that quick success because the kind of success I want to achieve is still far away. I don’t feel like I need to show anything to anyone: I have proved a lot and I just have to keep on with the good work I have done.
What inspires you when making music?
Places, space and landscapes. I am also very inspired when I have amazing gigs.
How does it feel to be part of a group of artists like Pole Group? What do you think it’s the strength of the label?
I feel very happy about it: it feels like family and this is very important to me. Pole Group is very strong and getting more and more people on board, I feel happy to be part of it.
If you had to use a word to describe the sound of Pole Group, which one would you use?
Unique.
Let’s talk about “Unknown Landscapes vol.6”, another important validation of your ability as an artist and recognition of your role within the label. Can you tell us a bit about the selection of the artists and the mixing?
Well, it was not a quick process, I selected some artists that I like, and I got the tracks, but unfortunately not everyone was able to send the tracks on time for the release. It’s almost impossible to get everyone we like in just one CD. I am very happy to have been invited for this ‘Unknown Landscapes Vol.6’: it means that my work is well done and has its value.
Your tracks have been played by Jeff Mills: something absolutely flattering for any artist. He recently said in an interview that techno music is, today more than ever, “about space and the cosmos”. Your music has often been described as cinematic, cosmic and hypnotic. Why in your opinion is the space so fascinating for techno artists?
Space is a fascinating thing. There is still too much to discover about it. It fascinates me to make music and imagine things from beyond.
You have proven to have a talent for exploring even some more delicate and experimental shades of techno, especially with “Space Exploration”. Will we ever see Lewis Fautzi making or playing ambient?
Yes, I have a new album to release in 2019. I want to explore this area because it is something that fascinates me a lot, maybe in the future I will do a live with visuals.
You have played in some of the best clubs in the world, is there a place where you’d like to play and haven’t yet?
It’s normal that I haven’t done yet everything that I wanted to, but I am sure it will happen in the near future.
What’s next for Lewis Fautzi?
At the beginning of 2019 I will release a new album on my label Faut Section and an EP on Soma Records in April. Much more is to come, but I don’t want to reveal anything.
