Magdalena: “Opia nasce da un processo naturale”

Magdalena ci parla del suo nuovo EP, “Opia”, in uscita il prossimo 27 gennaio per Warung Recordings.

Oggi ospite di Parkett, Magdalena ci racconta del nuovo disco “Opia” che esce il 27 gennaio su Warung Recordings. La dj e produttrice originaria di Amburgo è una figura molto nota nel panorama della musica elettronica internazionale, grazie al suo stile e tecnica che le hanno permesso di pubblicare dischi su Diynamic, Mobilee, Knee Deep in Sound e tante altre.

E pensare che tutto è iniziato quasi per gioco! Inizialmente manager e parte integrante dell’EGO, uno dei club più famosi di Amburgo, la dj è sempre stata a contatto con il mondo della musica elettronica fino a che un giorno si è messa alla prova in consolle, e da quel momento non vi è più scesa.

Anche la sua esperienza da produttrice è stato un passo immediato e, come lei stessa ripete più volte, è stato un processo naturale. La sua discografia ne è la prova più evidente: la sua traccia più conosciuta è sicuramente “Mountains of Es Cubelles” con la quale ha celebrato la vita nella Isla Bonita, ma non dimentichiamoci di altre chicche quali i remix per Marc Houle, Moby e Nicole Moudaber.

Oggi ci parla del suo ultimo progetto e della sua esperienza da dj e produttrice musicale. Vi auguriamo buona lettura!

Ciao Magdalena e benvenuta su Parkett! E’ un grande piacere averti qui con noi. Come stai?

Sto bene, grazie. Questo weekend sono a New York per lo show Teksupport con Nina Kraviz. L’anno è iniziato alla grande con show incredibili e con persone del cuore e amici che mi sono vicini.

Sei nata ad Amburgo. Da quando hai iniziato ad esplorare la scena musicale elettronica nella tua città natale? Quali differenze hai notato rispetto al panorama berlinese?

Ho incominciato ad uscire quando ero molto giovane, intrufolandomi nei club con mio fratello. Ne sono rimasta stupefatta!

Rispetto a Berlino certo, ci sono delle differenze, ma penso che su ogni dancefloor tutte le persone siano unite dalla passione per la musica e la voglia di sentirsi liberi in quel momento. Cosa che può accadere dappertutto nel mondo e non solo ad Amburgo o Berlino.

Qual è stato il primo show al quale hai assistito e quando hai capito che avresti voluto essere una dj e produttrice musicale?

Ho iniziato ad imparare così per gioco, trascorrendo tanto tempo nel club nel quale lavoravo (l’EGO, ndr) ed era una cosa naturale. Un giorno stavo per chiudere il club alle 10 del mattino e ho deciso di mettermi in consolle e provare. E proprio in quel momento ho sentito che questo sarebbe stato il mio futuro.

Ti sei anche affermata come una produttrice molto importante, rilasciando, tra le tante, su Diynamic di Solomun, Leena Music di Anja Schneider e Rebellion di Damian Lazarus. Com’è stato lavorare con questi “mostri sacri” della musica elettronica e che cosa hai imparato da ognuno di loro?

E’ qualcosa di incredibile. Alla base c’è una grande amicizia fondata su una connessione molto profonda tra tutti noi ed avere la possibilità di rilasciare musica su ognuna di queste etichette è qualcosa di straordinario. Penso che imparare sia un processo continuo tra noi umani e che faccia parte del percorso delle nostre vite.

Qual è il dj o produttore che ti ha più influenzato nella tua carriera artistica?

Anja (Schneider) è stata il mio mentore e la prima che mi ha fatto suonare in uno dei suoi show, pertanto ha avuto un ruolo peculiare nella mia carriera.

Il prossimo 27 gennaio uscirà “Opia” per Warung Recordings. Quali sono le idee e le emozioni che ti hanno portato a realizzare questo progetto?

L’idea alla base del disco è l’intensa ambiguità che provi quando guardi qualcuno negli occhi che ti può far sentire al contempo invadente e vulnerabile. Da qui il titolo, “Opia”.

E’ incredibile come sia possibile condividere questa emozione e spinta creativa partendo da un freddo studio in Germania a tutta la comunità musicale. Ed è appagante vedere la reazione del pubblico a tutto quello per cui hai lavorato.

Quali strumenti e tool usi nella tua produzione in studio?

Il sintetizzatore MOOG è il mio migliore amico in studio, oltre ad Ableton e Ableton Push.

Come valuti la tua evoluzione musicale a partire da “Mountains of Es Cubelles” (dove celebri Ibiza) e questo nuovo progetto per Warung?

Come ti dicevo prima, è stato un processo molto naturale. Trovare tempo per lavorare in studio è molto complicato quando viaggi molto per le date dei tour, dovendo pianificare tutto per bene in anticipo e provare a non essere distratta.

Cerco e trovo l’ispirazione da tutti gli eventi in cui suono e dal pubblico che vi partecipa. Provo le mie tracce “on the road” e qualche volta le modifico in base alla reazione del pubblico. E’ un’evoluzione continua con ogni release e show.

Come ti senti ad essere una figura importante nel panorama della musica elettronica internazionale?

Sono molto orgogliosa del mio percorso, mi sento anche fortunata di fare un mestiere che è al tempo stesso la mia passione. Mi piace andare in giro per il mondo a fare i tour ed incontrare gente fantastica. E apprezzo molto il fatto che ci siano delle persone che mi dedicano il loro tempo partecipando ai miei show.

Ci sono dei progetti futuri dei quali ci vuoi anticipare qualcosa? Ti vedremo in Italia presto?

Si, forse presto insieme ai Fideles 🙂

Today Magdalena is special guest at Parkett. She tells us about her new album “Opia” which will be released on January 27th for Warung Recordings. The Hamburg-born DJ and producer is a well-known figure in the international electronic music scene, thanks to her style and technique that allowed her to release records on Diynamic, Mobilee, Knee Deep in Sound and many others.

And to think that it all started almost as a game! Initially manager and integral part of EGO, one of the most famous clubs in Hamburg, the dj has always been in contact with the world of electronic music until one day she put herself to the test in the console and from that moment there is no more descended.

Her experience as a producer was also an immediate step and, as she herself repeats several times, it was a natural process that brought her to this point. And his discography is the clearest proof of this: his best-known track is certainly “Mountains of Es Cubelles” with which he celebrated life on Isla Bonita, but let’s not forget other gems such as the remixes for Marc Houle, Moby and Nicole Moudaber.

But today she talks to us about her latest project and her experience as a DJ and music producer, enjoy!

Hi Magdalena, welcome to Parkett! Pleasure to have you with us today. How are you doing?

I am good thanks! Currently in New York for the Teksupport show this weekend in Brooklyn with Nina Kraviz. I’ve had a great start to the new year with awesome shows, surrounded by great people and friends.

You were born in Hamburg. Since when you started to explore the electronic and underground movement over there? And which differences you can see with respect to Berlin environment?

I started going out when I was young and I would sneak into clubs with my brother. It made a huge impression on me!

With regards to Berlin, of course they have their differences, but I think on the dancefloor everyone is united by their love for the music and get lost in the moment, so could really be anywhere on the planet.

What has been you first gig attended that you have in mind and what has been the bulb light moment when you realized that you want to become a DJ and producer?

I had been learning for fun before, and spending a lot of time at the club I was working at, which made it feel very natural. One day I was closing up the club by myself at 10 AM and I decided to get on the decks and have a go. It was then that I could really visualize this becoming my future – it just felt right.

You have also quickly established yourself as an important producer. Releasing for Solomun’s Diynamic, Anja Schneider’s Leena Music and Damian Lazarus’ Rebellion amongst all. How has been working with all of these important people in the electronic music? What did you learn from them?

It really is amazing. Underneath it all is friendship, and a connection that runs deep and being able to share your creations on those imprints is an indescribable feeling. I think as humans we are always learning from one and other and is all part of the process of life.

Which dj, producer and/or artist influences you the most in your journey?

Anja was my mentor and the first one to have me play at her events, so she has played a massive role in my journey.

The next 27^th January you will release the four track EP “Opia” for Warung Recordings: what are the ideas and feelings that made this project come true?

The idea behind the EP is the ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eyes, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vunerable, hence the name Opia.

It’s great to see how everything from the creativity aspect in the studio in cold Germany developed, and now to spread this and to share this with the music community. It always feels crazy to finally release what you’ve been working on and see the way it resonates with people.

Usually, how made up the studio gear that supports you in the musical production?

My MOOG synthesizer is one of my best friends in the studio, and other than that I use a mix of Ableton and Ableton Push.

From “Mountains of Es Cubells” celebrating Ibiza to your new project for Warung, how has been Magdalena’s musical evolution?

As mentioned before, everything has been a very organic process. Finding time for the studio is tricky with all the touring, as you really have to plan it in advance and try to not get distracted. I take inspiration from all the events I play and the crowds I get to connect with. I test my productions on the road and sometimes tweak them on the go depending on the reaction. I continue to evolve with every release and show.

Following the previous question, how do you feel to be an international and well-established presence in the world of the electronic music?

I am proud of my journey so far, and I feel lucky to be able to do what I am passionate about for my job. I love to be able to tour around the world and meet with so many great people. I always appreciate people taking the time to come out to my shows.

There are some upcoming projects that you would like to share with us? Will we see you soon for some dates in Italy?
