Maike Depas, al secolo Michelangelo De Pasquale, è l’artista che ospitiamo oggi su Parkett. In occasione della sua ultima release “Tokyo Nights”, sulla PushMaster Disc di Mattia Trani il producer milanese ha scritto un nuovo capitolo nella propria storia musicale. L’innovazione, parola chiave del suo operato, si sposta su uno scenario distopico, in cui i confini tra presente e futuro, hanno come background una Tokyo fumosa ed affascinante.
Angoscia e gioia, fame di scoperta e attesa snervante sono gli ossimori che cavalcano con forza tutto l’Ep che racchiude la capacità di Maike di unire mondi diversi, riutilizzando con intelligenza suoni analogici e arricchendoli di sfumature inedite e contemporanee. Un viaggio a tratti ancestrale, a tratti spaziale. Con un’unicità stilistica che si espande oltre i confini della produzione per plasmare un immaginario estetico in cui la musica è protagonista e forza creatrice. Ne abbiamo parlato con lui in questa interessante intervista che potete leggere con sottofondo la sua traccia “Tokyo Nights” in sottofondo.
Ciao Maike, benvenuto su Parkett, è un piacere averti come nostro ospite. Partendo dal tuo sound e dalle tue produzioni, una parola che sicuramente descrive la tua visione musicale è evoluzione. A che punto ti trovi oggi nel tuo percorso evolutivo musicale?
Grazie per avermi accolto su Parkett! Il mio mantra, che costituisce anche il fondamento del mio studio di registrazione, The Innovation Studio, è: Explore, Experiment, Create, Innovate. Pertanto, è evidente che all’interno del mio viaggio musicale e sonoro, il concetto di evoluzione occupa un posto centrale nella mia visione artistica. Il mio percorso evolutivo è in continua crescita, frutto di anni di studio e sperimentazione sonora. Questo percorso mi ha permesso di trovare una dimensione personale nella quale mi sento parte integrante e sicuro di poter esprimere al meglio la mia essenza musicale, specialmente nel contesto della musica Techno.
Tokyo Night è il tuo prossimo EP, in uscita il 24 maggio su Pushmaster Disc di Mattia Trani. L’EP racconta una Tokyo distopica, in cui la differenza tra presente e futuro è impercettibile. Come mai hai scelto proprio Tokyo come scenario sia estetico che musicale di questo lavoro? Cosa ti lega e ti affascina di questa città?
La mia visione musicale ed immaginaria è fortemente influenzata da modelli e ambientazioni futuristiche e distopiche, capaci di trasportare l’ascoltatore verso destinazioni ignote, cariche di emozioni intense e significati profondi. Tokyo rappresenta per me il paradigma più vicino di una realtà che si muove
simultaneamente su tre dimensioni: passato, presente e futuro. La capitale giapponese mi ha permesso di entrare in contatto diretto con una dimensione futura, caratterizzata da una diversità e un dinamismo che
anticipano la società del domani. Questa esperienza ha influenzato profondamente la composizione dei brani nel mio prossimo EP “Tokyo Nights”.
Nel disco ci sono dei rimandi alla trance anni ’90 e in particolare tra le influenze hai citato Virtual Self e il grande Mike Push. Negli ultimi anni abbiamo assistito ad una profonda rivalutazione di questo genere che ha influenzato tantissimo l’evoluzione della techno contemporanea. A tuo modo di vedere e in questo EP come hai utilizzato e rielaborato queste influenze per ottenere un carattere deciso che non sia allineato al mercato discografico attuale?
In “Tokyo Nights Ep” sono evidenti i riferimenti alla musica Trance, dalle linee melodiche di “Never The Same Again” alle sezioni ritmiche e di basso in “Shuriken”; L’Ep ha contribuito a creare una fusione tra diversi sottogeneri a cui sono particolarmente legato, come : l’Hard Techno, la Psy Trance e l’Hyper Techno. La traccia “Tokyo Nights” presenta un ritmo veloce e deciso, con breaks cinematici e drop esplosivi, pensati per far scatenare ogni raver sul dance floor. Ho cercato di influenzare il sound contemporaneo in modo originale e unico, affinché rappresentasse la mia essenza musicale artistica.
Molte delle tracce sono state registrate one take, ti va di spiegarci il perché di questa scelta?
Durante il periodo in cui ho composto gran parte delle tracce di “Tokyo Nights Ep”, ero particolarmente ispirato. Per non perdere l’essenza primordiale delle mie creazioni, ho deciso che le prime take rappresentavano nella loro incompletezza la vera bellezza e originalità di queste composizioni. Per realizzare queste tracce, sono partito dall’origine della fonte sonora, ossia i miei amati sintetizzatori. Ho lavorato intensamente a monte sul sound design e, solo quando ho sentito di aver raggiunto il colore sonoro desiderato con le varie strumentazioni del mio studio, ho iniziato a scrivere una grande jam di strumenti, che ha poi portato alla realizzazione delle tracce del mio prossimo EP.
“Never The Same Again” rappresenta un punto di passaggio all’interno dell’EP. La chiusura di un vecchio capitolo e l’apertura di uno nuovo, un contrasto emotivo spesso difficile da trasmettere in un unico lavoro. Cosa ha rappresentato questo testamento in musica di un passaggio importante nella tua vita e quanto è difficile raccontare emozioni così distinte in un processo compositivo?
“Never the Same Again” è la traccia a cui sono più affezionato dell’EP, poiché riflette le emozioni vissute durante il periodo in cui l’ho scritta. È un turbinio costante di gioia e sana malinconia per la chiusura di un capitolo della mia vita e l’apertura di uno nuovo, che, come suggerisce il drop finale, è appena iniziato e desidera mostrarsi con forza al pubblico. Trasmettere tali emozioni è difficile da esprimere a parole o per iscritto. Come artista, ho cercato di far parlare la musica per me, creando una traccia che ha un valore
simbolico importante, senza dimenticare la sua natura da dance floor, con una ritmica incalzante e vari layer di synth che culminano in un hook finale, capace di suscitare nell’ascoltatore emozioni intense e ricche di energia positiva.
Nel lavoro di accompagnamento alla tua musica realizzi dei video che rendono al tuo mondo musicale un immaginario visivo molto preciso e originale. Quale sarà l’universo visivo di Tokyo Nights e in che modo si evolverà questo aspetto assolutamente importante nello sviluppo della tua personalità artistica in futuro?
Un piccolo spoiler in esclusiva per Parkett: attualmente sto lavorando con il mio team a un progetto immersivo molto ambizioso, che seguirà la scia dei miei già noti essential mix sul mio canale YouTube, rielaborati completamente in una dimensione 3D. Questo progetto coinvolgerà la collaborazione di artisti 3D di fama mondiale, per generare un prodotto innovativo e visivamente dinamico. In questo contesto, eseguirò anche “Tokyo Nights” e sarà presente un visual che rifletterà l’immaginario visivo
che la traccia stessa vuole raccontare. L’immaginario visivo rappresenta un elemento cruciale del mio progetto artistico, definendo la produzione musicale e l’estetica della mia persona. In futuro, spero di poter portare sempre di più la mia esperienza multi-dimensionale dal vivo.
Come vedi Maike Depas tra qualche anno e cosa ti auguri per il tuo futuro (musicale e non)?
Aspiro a rappresentare una sintesi originale e unica nel panorama techno, distinguendomi per un’evoluzione costante e innovativa che possa influenzare positivamente il mondo musicale e lasciare un segno duraturo.

Maike Depas lands on Mattia Trani’s PushMaster Disc with the new EP “Tokyo Nights”. Read the exclusive interview and preview the title track.
Maike Depas, born Michelangelo De Pasquale, is the artist we are hosting today on Parkett. On the occasion of his latest release “Tokyo Nights”, on Mattia Trani’s PushMaster Disc, the Milanese producer has written a new chapter in his musical history. Innovation, the key word in his work, moves to a dystopian scenario, in which the boundaries between present and future have a smoky and fascinating Tokyo as their background.
Anguish and joy, hunger for discovery and unnerving anticipation are the oxymorons that forcefully ride throughout the EP which contains Maike’s ability to unite different worlds, intelligently reusing analogue sounds and enriching them with new and contemporary nuances. A journey that is at times ancestral, at times spatial. With a stylistic uniqueness that expands beyond the boundaries of production to shape an aesthetic imagination in which music is the protagonist and creative force. We talked about it with him in this interesting interview which you can read with his track “Tokyo Nights” playing in the background
Hi Maike, welcome to Parkett, it’s a pleasure to have you as our guest. Starting from your sound and your productions, a word that certainly describes your musical vision is evolution. At what point are you today in your musical evolutionary path?
Thanks for having me on Parkett! My mantra, which also forms the foundation of my recording studio, The Innovation Studio, is: Explore, Experiment, Create, Innovate. Therefore, it is evident that within my musical and sonic journey, the concept of evolution occupies a central place in my artistic vision. My evolutionary path is constantly growing, the result of years of study and sound experimentation. This path has allowed me to find a personal dimension in which I feel an integral part and confident in being able to best express my musical essence, especially in the context of Techno music.
Tokyo Night is your next EP, out on May 24th on Mattia Trani’s Pushmaster Disc. The EP tells of a dystopian Tokyo, where the difference between present and future is imperceptible. Why did you choose Tokyo as both the aesthetic and musical setting for this work? What binds and fascinates you about this city?
My musical and imaginary vision is strongly influenced by futuristic and dystopian models and settings, capable of transporting the listener to unknown destinations, full of intense emotions and profound meanings. Tokyo represents for me the closest paradigm of a moving reality simultaneously on three dimensions: past, present and future. The Japanese capital allowed me to come into direct contact with a future dimension, characterized by a diversity and dynamism that they anticipate the society of tomorrow. This experience profoundly influenced the composition of the songs in my upcoming EP “Tokyo Nights”.
In the album there are references to 90s trance and in particular among the influences you mentioned Virtual Self and the great Mike Push. In recent years we have witnessed a profound reevaluation of this genre which has greatly influenced the evolution of contemporary techno. In your opinion and in this EP, how did you use and rework these influences to obtain a strong character that is not aligned with the current recording market?
In “Tokyo Nights Ep” the references to Trance music are evident, from the melodic lines of “Never The Same Again” to the rhythmic and bass sections in “Shuriken”. The Ep contributed to creating a fusion between different subgenres which are particularly related. Such as: Hard Techno, Psy Trance and Hyper Techno. The track “Tokyo Nights” features a fast and decisive rhythm, with cinematic breaks and explosive drops, designed to make every raver go wild on the dance floor tried to influence the contemporary sound in an original and unique way, so that it represented my artistic musical essence.
Many of the tracks were recorded one take, would you like to explain to us the reason for this choice?
During the time I composed most of the tracks for “Tokyo Nights Ep”, I was particularly inspired. In order not to lose the primordial essence of my creations, I decided that the first takes represented in their incompleteness the true beauty and originality of these compositions. To create these tracks, I started from the origin of the sound source, namely my beloved synthesizers and i worked intensely upstream on the sound design and, only when I felt I had achieved the desired sound color with the various instruments in my studio, I started to write a great jam of instruments, which then led to the creation of the tracks for my next EP.
“Never The Same Again” represents a point of passage within the EP. The closing of an old chapter and the opening of a new one, an emotional contrast that is often difficult to convey in a single work. What did this musical testament of an important passage in your life represent and how difficult is it to convey such distinct emotions in a compositional process?
“Never the Same Again” is the track I am most fond of on the EP, as it reflects the emotions I experienced during the time I wrote it. It’s a constant whirlwind of joy and healthy melancholy for the closing of a chapter of my life and the opening of a new one, which, as the final drop suggests, has just begun and wishes to forcefully show itself to the public. Conveying such emotions is difficult to express in words or in writing. As an artist, I tried to let the music speak for me, creating a track that has value
symbolically important, without forgetting its dance floor nature, with a pressing rhythm and various synth layers that culminate in a final hook, capable of arousing intense emotions in the listener, full of positive energy.
In the work accompanying your music, you create videos that give your musical world a very precise and original visual imagery. What will the visual universe of Tokyo Nights be and how will this absolutely important aspect evolve in the development of your artistic personality in the future?
A small spoiler exclusively for Parkett: I am currently working with my team on a very ambitious immersive project, which will follow in the wake of my already well-known essential mixes on my YouTube channel, completely reworked in a 3D dimension. This project will involve the collaboration of world-renowned 3D artists, to generate an innovative and visually dynamic product. In this context, I will also perform “Tokyo Nights” and there will be a visual that reflects the visual imagery that the track itself wants to tell. Visual imagery represents a crucial element of my artistic project, defining the musical production and aesthetics of my person. In the future, I hope to bring my multi-dimensional experience live more and more.
How do you see Maike Depas in a few years and what do you hope for your future (musical and otherwise)?
I aspire to represent an original and unique synthesis in the techno scene, standing out for a constant and innovative evolution that can positively influence the musical world and leave a lasting mark.
