Circa 20 anni fa usciva uno dei brani più iconici nella storia della house music: “Get Get Down” di Paul Johnson. Nel corso degli anni, il brano in questione è stato rivisitato da diversi DJ, nessuno dei quali però è mai riuscito a realizzare qualcosa di brillante quanto l’originale.
La storia di Chicago è variegata per numero di artisti che hanno fatto le veci di ambasciatori del genere e Paul Johnson è uno di quelli che incarna la vera essenza di una cultura che, negli anni, ha fatto sognare (e ballare) milioni di appassionati.
Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato Paul Johnson.

Ciao Paul è un vero piacere conoscerti e poterti rivolgere alcune domande. Sei un leggenda nel mondo del clubbing: come è nata la tua passione per il DJing e la musica elettronica?
La mia passione è iniziata nel 1983 con mio cugino Marc: lui aveva tutta l’attrezzatura a casa sua. Dopo aver visto per la prima volta un D.J. mettere dei dischi ad una festa ho detto ai miei genitori che questo era quello che volevo fare per il resto della mia vita. All’epoca avevo solo 13 anni.
La musica come anche la dimensione dei club è cambiata profondamente: pensi abbia ragione chi dica che l’house music è morta?
Assolutamente no! La musica cambia giorno dopo giorno, ma un genere non cambierà mai! La musica house non é morta e non morirà MAI!
Chi sono i DJ che possono portare avanti la tradizione musicale di Chicago?
I fondatori che hanno creato questo genere si esibiscono ancora. Abbiamo occupato (e occuperemo) Chicago PER SEMPRE!
Penso che l’incidente di cui sei stato vittima abbia cambiato la tua vita: quanto è stata importante la musica in quel periodo?
Era un nuovo inizio per me; niente era più importante dell’ESSERE VIVO!
Sono passati circa vent’anni da quando la tua Get Get Down raggiungeva la prima posizione nella Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs. Cosa ha significato per te quel brano?
Sono entrato nella storia della musica dance da quel momento in poi. Non servono altre parole…
Il mercato musicale è cambiato tantissimo negli anni: come è cambiato l’approccio di Paul Johnson? Trovi ancora brani in grado di emozionarti?
Sono letteralmente lo stesso musicalmente. Compro la mia musica allo stesso modo (o forse più) di quando ero ragazzo. Ci sono ancora buoni artisti che pubblicano buona musica: trovarla non è mai stato un problema.
Pensi che la pandemia in corso abbia cambiato il mondo della musica e possa portare ad un default?
Non è cambiato nulla. C’è ancora ancora tempo per i club. Semplicemente dobbiamo aspettare il momento in cui tutti possano tornare a divertirsi. Nulla è diverso.
Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci nel prossimo futuro da Paul Johnson?
Sono un leggenda della musica house: non smetterò mai di pubblicare progetti o remix per artisti. Ne ho rilasciati diversi solo nel 2020 e ne rilascerò molti altri quest’anno. Tenete gli occhi e le orecchie all’erta.

Hi Paul, it’s a real pleasure to meet you and to be able to ask you some questions. You are a legend for clubbing: how did your passion for DJing and electronic music start?
My passion started in 1983 from my cousin Marc. He had equipment at his home. And after I first saw a D.J. play records at a party I told my parents that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was 13 years old at the time.
Music and the dimension of clubs has significantly changed: do you think anyone who says that house music is dead is right?
Absolutely not! Music forever changes but Genre’s don’t! House music will NEVER DIE!
Who are the DJs who have the potential to continue the tradition of chicago classic house?
The same originators are still playing Earth. So we have Chicago held down forever!
I think that the accident you were victim of has changed your life: how important was music in that period?
It was the beginning for me, so nothing was more important than BEING ALIVE!
It’s been about 20 years since your song Get Get Down hit # 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. What did that song mean to you?
I am “FOREVER IN HISTORY” from it. No words needed…
The music business has changed a lot over the years: how has Paul Johnson’s way of approaching this changed? Do you still find songs that can excite you?
I literally is the same musically. I buy just as much or more music to play. Good artists always release good music so it’s never a problem.
Do you think the current pandemic has changed the world of music?
It hasn’t changed at all. Only time is tanding still for the clubs. Simply waiting until we all can return. NOTHING is different.
What should we expect from Paul Johnson in the near future?
I am a legendary house music producer. I will never stop releasing projects or remixes for artists. I have released several in 2020 alone. And will release several more e.p.’s this year. Keep your eyes and ears on the lookout.
