Martina BalloccoPerel è stata una delle grandi protagoniste del Naturalis Fest. L’ abbiamo incontrata per parlare del suo legame con l’Italia e Napoli e la nuova avventura con la sua label Hits Hits Records.
Artiste come Perel dovrebbero avere molte più gigs in Italia. Siamo sicuri che il pubblico italiano dovrebbe avere la possibilità di conoscere e ascoltare qualcosa che riempia di significato la parola eclettismo e di poter veramente viaggiare attraverso un set in una spirale sonora in cui immergersi senza timore. I set della dj nata nella Germania Est, nella provincia sassone, decisamente lontana dai templi sacri del clubbing tedesco, sono un connubio di capacità tecnica e frequenze stratificate. Si respira l’amore per Aphex Twin e quello per Michael Mayer, l’ anima più house legata a Running Back, la Perel che non vuole stare nelle regole del canonico dj set eclettico e costruisce nuovi linguaggi. Ancora più variegati, ancora più apparentemente sconnessi ma capaci di un dialogo reale, autentico. Sempre in connessione con la pista, mai in connessione con quello che la pista si aspetta.
Perel è così: la consolle è il palco dove si esprime anche come performer si, ma senza smettere di sorprendere, di raccontare un’ idea di elettronica divertente ma mai banale.
Ciao Perel, benvenuta su Parkett, è un grande piacere averti con noi. Oggi siamo nella splendida cornice di Umoya per il Naturalis Fest,cosa significa per te tornare a Napoli e che rapporto hai con il team artistico che sta dietro al festival?
Significa molto per me – La prima volta che sono venuta a Napoli è stato nel 2018 quando ho suonato ad una festa in spiaggia per Woo! Augusto Penna mi ha invitato e siamo diventati amici condividendo lo stesso amore per i vecchi brani anni ’80. Ricordo che ascoltavamo The Human League nella sua macchina e abbiamo avuto delle fantastiche discussioni. Anche l’evento vero e proprio in spiaggia è stato fantastico: sono rimasta sorpresa da quante persone sono venute a vedermi e conoscevano la mia musica considerando che allora ero abbastanza nuova nel panorama musicale.
Il festival è immerso in un’oasi naturale, perfetta per staccare la spina dal caos della vita quotidiana. Nella tua vita, come riesci a prenderti una pausa dalla tua attività di DJ e qual è il tuo personale modo di entrare in contatto con la natura?
Non è sempre facile, soprattutto da quando mi sono trasferita a New York quattro anni fa. Mi sono sentita piuttosto sopraffatta. Ad essere onesti, mi connetto maggiormente con la natura quando torno a casa in Germania e vado a trovare i miei genitori. Sono cresciuta in campagna in una piccola città della Sassonia. La vita è semplice ma bella. Le persone apprezzano il bellissimo paesaggio circondato da montagne e boschi.
Lo scorso 31 maggio è uscito per la tuaetichetta “1 Life”. Vuoi raccontarci la storia di questo nuovo brano e quale ulteriore libertà creativa ti sei concessa nel creare un brano per la tua label?
La storia dietro la mia etichetta “Hits Hits Hits Records” si cela nel fatto che amo suonare e produrre musica di generi e background diversi. La scena della musica elettronica è diventata così vasta ma ormai raramente ascolto DJ set eclettici. Il mio approccio alla musica dance o alla musica in generale è sempre stato diverso: quando produco o faccio la DJ preferisco seguire le vibrazioni piuttosto che pensare “oh, la polizia dei DJ proibisce di mescolare la disco con la techno o non suonerebbe quel tipo di stile”.Quindi avere la mia etichetta ha stimolato la mia creatività sapendo di essere in grado di pubblicare musica che non ha bisogno dell’approvazione di altre persone. Spesso inizio a fare musica senza alcun obiettivo e i miei follower sanno che per me i generi non contano. Quando ho prodotto “1 Life” volevo semplicemente creare una traccia che mi sarebbe piaciuto suonare nei miei set. È influenzata dalla Progressive House degli anni ’90.
Nella tua musica e nella tua espressione artistica c’è sempre un senso di ribellione. Nella musica chi può definirsi ribelle e oggi cosa significa ribellarsi anche a livello musicale?
Non so chi sia veramente un ribelle. Alcuni sono davvero bravi a fingere. Tutto quello che so è che molti artisti mi hanno toccato e influenzato. Tra le mie artiste contemporanee preferite ci sono Marie Davidson e Helena Hauff. Le adoro perché sono autenticge e “a prova di pubblicità”.Personalmente non intendo essere ribelle, suppongo che accada in modo naturale. Tutto quello che posso dire è che la musica che sto facendo viene dal profondo del mio cuore: è un riflesso di me stessa, e se la gente ci vede qualcosa di ribelle sono onorata.
In passato hai affermato di avere paura di rimanere intrappolata all’interno del sistema. Quali sono le cose che ti piacciono meno del sistema discografico e hai mai avuto la sensazione di essere limitata o di trovare difficoltà nella tua espressione artistica?
Sì, l’ho sentito abbastanza spesso. Ciò che davvero non mi piace è il fatto che quasi tutto sia diventato orientato allo streaming, alle visualizzazioni e ai Mi piace. Oltre a ciò, gli algoritmi determinano cosa è visibile o quale brano viene aggiunto a una playlist. Alcune etichette non decidono nemmeno più quale musica è più adatta a loro, ma quanti follower e quanti stream ha raggiunto un artista su diverse piattaforme. Quindi puoi immaginare quanto sia difficile per gli artisti rimanere fedeli a se stessi e non lasciarsi influenzare da questi meccanismi.
Tornando al tuo dj set qui al Naturalis, che tipo di set hai pensato per questa occasione?
Quando ho visto le foto del locale circondato dalla natura, mi è venuta voglia di suonare musica che fosse divertente e giocosa invece di accontentare solo i ballerini più techno del dancefloor. Ho preparato un po’ di tutto per portare le persone in un viaggio. E penso che abbia funzionato abbastanza bene.
Lasciaci con i tre album che ti ossessionano in questo periodo e un saluto speciale per i tuoi fan italiani.
Non giudicarmi ma mi piace il nuovo album di Dua Lipa “Radical Optimism”. Quando si parla di musica elettronica il MUST assoluto è il nuovo album di Gestaffelstein “Gamma”. Inoltre, il mio buon amico Curses sta per pubblicare un nuovo album: la traccia del titolo “Another Heaven” è appena stata pubblicata e mi ha lasciato senza fiato. Sicuramente sarà un MUST!
Ai miei fan di Napoli: non posso davvero descriverlo, ma sento un legame speciale con voi: voi ragazzi siete così affettuosi e divertenti allo stesso tempo. È come tornare a casa, soprattutto perché ho incontrato volti familiari che mi seguono fin dalla mia prima uscita, conoscono i testi delle mie canzoni e si sono presentati quando li ho suonati qui nel 2018. Rivederli è stato tutto per me! Sono più che grata e commossa e di certo non lo do per scontato. Grazie!Quindi, ogni volta che Napoli mi rivuole, sono la sua umile servitrice e non vedo l’ora che arrivi la prossima volta. Vi amo.

Hi Perel, welcome to Parkett, it’s a great pleasure to have you with us. Today we are in the splendid setting of Umoya for Naturalis Fest,what does returning to Naples mean to you and what relationship do you have with the artistic team behind the festival?
It means a lot to me – The first time I came to Naples was in 2018 when I played a beach party for Woo! Augusto Penna invited me and we became friends by sharing the same love for old 80s tunes. I remember we listened to The Human League in his car and had the best conversations.The actual show at the beach was great too – I was surprised how many people came to see me and knew my music considering I was quite a newcomer back then.
The festival is immersed in a natural oasis, perfect for disconnecting from the chaos of everyday life. In your life, how do you manage to take a break from your DJ activity and what is your personal way of getting in touch with nature?
It’s not always easy, especially when I moved to New York City four years ago. I felt pretty overwhelmed. To be honest, I connect with nature the most when I come home to Germany and visit my parents. I grew up on the countryside in a small town in Saxony. Life is simple but good. People appreciate the beautiful landscape surrounded by mountains and woods.
Last May 31st “1 Life” was released on your label. Would you like to tell us the story of this new song and what additional creative freedom you allowed yourself in creating a track on your personal label?
The story behind my label “Hits Hits Hits Records” is that I love playing and producing music from different genres and backgrounds. The electronic music scene has become so huge but I rarely hear eclectic DJ sets anymore. My approach to dance music or music in general was always different – When I produce or DJ I rather follow vibes than thinking “oh the DJ police prohibited mixing disco with techno or wouldn’t play that kind of style”.So having my own label boosted my creativity knowing I’m able to release music that doesn’t need other people’s approval. I often start making music with no goal and my followers know that genres don’t matter to me. When I produced “1 Life” I just wanted to create a track I would enjoy playing in my sets. It’s influenced by Progressive House from the 90s.
In your music and your artistic expression there is always a sense of rebellion. In music who rebels in your opinion and today what does it mean to rebel also on a musical level?
I don’t know who truly is a rebel. Some are really good in pretending. All I know is that a lot of artists touched and influenced me. One of my favorite contemporary artists are Marie Davidson and Helena Hauff. Love them for being authentic and “hype-proof”.Me personally, I don’t intend to be rebellious – I suppose it happens naturally. All I can say is that the music I’m making comes deep from the bottom of my heart – it’s a reflection of myself, and if people see something rebellious in it I’m honored.
You have stated in the past that you are afraid of being trapped within the system. What are the things you like least in the recording system and have you ever had the feeling of being limited or finding difficulties in your artistic expression?
Yes I felt that quite often. What I really dislike is the fact that almost everything became stream, view and likes oriented. On top of that, algorithms determine what’s visible or which song gets added to a playlist. Some labels don’t even decide anymore which music actually speaks to them but how many followers and streams an artists accomplished on several platforms.So you can imagine how hard it is for artists to stay true to themselves and not get affected by these mechanics.
Returning to your DJ set here at Naturalis. Perel, what type of set did you organized for this occasion?
When I saw pictures of the venue surrounded by nature, I felt like I want to play music that’s fun and playful instead of just serving hard dancefloor belters. I prepared a little bit of everything in order to take people on a journey. And I think it worked pretty well.

Don’t judge me but I like Dua Lipa’s new album “Radical Optimism”.When it come to electronic music the absolute MUST is Gestaffelstein’s new album “Gamma”. Plus, my good friend Curses is about to bring out a new album – the title track “Another Heaven” just got released and blew me away. Definitely a MUST as well!To my Naples fans: I can’t really describe it but I feel a special connection to you – you guys are so warmhearted and fun at the same time. It feels like coming home, especially since I met a couple of familiar faces who follow since my first release, know the lyrics of my songs and showed up when played here back in 2018. Seeing them again was everything to me! I’m beyond grateful as well as touched and certainly don’t take that for granted.
