Le arti e la musica sperimentale sono argomenti che spesso e volentieri, soprattutto in Italia, rimangono marginali al grande pubblico. Tuttavia, realtà solide e affermate a livello europeo sono nate nell’arco degli anni, portando all’attenzione della loro “audience” una via parallela e atipica per apprezzare il suono e le immagini. Abbiamo il piacere di presentarvi un collettivo fondato da due artisti italiani, tra Londra e Berlino, con l’obiettivo principale di offrire al mondo uno spettacolo sonoro-visivo singolare e sperimentale: Under My Feet.
Ireen Amnes e DE:MA sono i due artisti al vertice del progetto. Entrambi condividono una grande passione per la musica industrial e sperimentale, spesso sono accomunati da una intensa ricerca di suoni strani e distorti. Nel 2015 in Gran Bretagna Ireen fonda, autofinanziandosi, Under My Feet. con l’obiettivo di offrire una serie di eventi nei quali ogni artista potesse esprimersi nel modo più intimo e sincero. Con un costante lavoro di promozione della scena emergente circostante, il collettivo si è affermato come perno delle arti sperimentali e creative.
Grazie al ricco bagaglio artistico-musicale dei due produttori e delle varie figure che gravitano attorno ad Under My Feet. l’offerta musicale del collettivo non è mai scontata o banale. La loro musica è caratterizzata dai generi noise, experimental, post-industrial, industrial e IDM. Nel tempo hanno realizzato 18 eventi in tutta Europa, spostandosi tra Londra, Berlino, Milano e Roma. Non sono mancate importanti collaborazioni con artisti come Drew McDowall, Hiro Kone, Puce Mary ed altri ancora.
Abbiamo avuto il piacere di scambiare qualche battuta con Ireen Amnes e DE:MA di Under My Feet.
Ciao Jacopo, ciao Ireen è un piacere avervi qui su Parkett, benvenuti. Vorrei iniziare con il conoscervi meglio dal punto di vista artistico-musicale, con particolare attenzione sul collettivo Under My Feet.
Jacopo: Ciao Riccardo, grazie per l’invito. Sin da quando avevo 16 anni sono stato ossessionato dalla musica elettronica. Ho iniziato a produrre musica esclusivamente a 140bpm con l’alias Fluid Cubo e poco tempo dopo ho incominciato a fare i miei primi DJ set in vari club romani.
Ciò che mi ha spinto a trasferirmi a Londra è stata sicuramente la passione per la musica, in Italia la scena era piuttosto stagnante e sentivo il bisogno di trasferirmi in un posto con una scena più eccitante e varia. Ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare artisti che mi hanno orientato e supportato nella mia crescita personale e artistica.
Sono entrato a far parte di UMF due anni dopo la sua nascita e fin dall’inizio abbiamo lavorato duramente per raggiungere i nostri obiettivi, imparando a conoscerci e ad ascoltare uniti dal comune desiderio di promuovere la musica sperimentale. Prima della pandemia, stavamo concentrando la maggior parte delle nostre energie sugli eventi, ma quando il mondo si è fermato abbiamo avuto la possibilità di spostare la nostra attenzione sull’etichetta.
Ireen: Ciao Riccardo, la musica ha sempre fatto parte della mia vita. Ho iniziato a studiare musica all’età di 10 anni (canto, chitarra acustica e pianoforte). A 14 anni ho iniziato a cantare in un piano bar grazie a mio padre che mi inserì in quel mondo per fare pratica. Ricordo di aver odiato quell’ambiente, perché mi ritrovavo spesso a dover cantare le classiche canzoni pop o folk italiane, mentre io ero totalmente ossessionata con i The Cure, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Slayer… A 18 anni mi sono trasferita in Inghilterra ed è lì dove ho preso parte in diverse band metal e progressive come cantante e bassista.
La mia passione per la musica elettronica invece è iniziata ascoltando bands/artisti come Depeche Mode, NIN, Bjork, LFO (ovviamente per poi cadere nel vortice Warp Records). Il mio percorso successivo è stato dettato dalla voglia di sperimentare con il suono. Ero ancora in una band ma stavo nel frattempo imparando ad usare Ableton Live e ad investire ogni risparmio su sintetizzatori e drum machine. Nel 2015, puramente per caso, mi è stato proposto di curare una sala in un locale di Londra ed è stato lì dove ha preso vita UMF.
Nel corso degli anni successivi il mio focus è stato esclusivamente nella produzione di musica elettronica come solista, sebbene recentemente ho iniziato un nuovo progetto in collaborazione con Infinity Division: ‘s.a.t.i.n.’. Il progetto richiama una vibe post-industrial nella quale ho ripreso il basso ed a cantare.
Con UMF. invece, il goal è stato quello di condividere la passione per un tipo di ‘sound’ considerato di nicchia attraverso la programmazione artistica dei nostri eventi e di conseguenza la label. È stato un percorso che si è sviluppato in maniera organica.
Vi andrebbe di raccontarci i vari progetti e le varie idee che state sviluppando in questi anni?
Jacopo: Quest’anno UMF ha compiuto otto anni e per festeggiarlo al meglio abbiamo annunciato un Various Artist che uscirà il 26 Maggio. Per citare qualche nome ci sarà una collaborazione esclusiva tra Ireen Amnes e Drew McDowall, Vanity Productions, il duo canadese Orphx ,Silent Servant e molti altri artisti vicini a noi.
Ireen: Con la creazione della label, in parallelo alle uscite di musica inedita abbiamo visto la nascita di “Live On Tape”, una serie dedicata a live sets registrati su cassetta. Questo progetto è personalmente uno dei miei preferiti in quanto rappresenta una memoria tangibile di un momento passato ai nostri eventi.
Riguardo ad altri progetti, vogliamo sicuramente iniziare a curare più eventi su Berlino seppur continuando a lavorare regolarmente su Londra. Sicuramente il nostro focus sarà soprattutto nella label.
Le arti sperimentali sono un punto focale del vostro collettivo, ci piacerebbe sapere quanta passione e ricerca c’è dietro ogni vostra idea e intuizione.
Jacopo: La musica noise, sperimentale, post-industriale, industriale e IDM è sempre stata presente nelle sottoculture e nelle arti d’avanguardia. Fin dagli anni ’70, musicisti e artisti hanno utilizzato media convenzionali in modi non convenzionali per creare nuove forme d’arte e di espressione. L’obiettivo di Under My Feet. è quello di creare una situazione che favorisca questo tipo di performance, incoraggiando gli artisti a rompere i confini e a superare i limiti.
I risultati sono eventi che promuovono musica atipica, ma non per questo meno stimolante e apprezzata. In passato abbiamo avuto modo di esprimere al meglio il nostro concept organizzando esibizioni e performance artistiche, supportando la comunità LGBTQ+ locale fornendo loro una piattaforma per esporre le loro opere.
Creare qualcosa da zero, frutto dei propri sforzi e sacrifici richiede grande determinazione. Mi piacerebbe soffermarmi sul vostro percorso e quale direzione prendere, scoprire cosa ci sarà in futuro e quali sono state le difficoltà incontrate.
Ireen: Come menzionato sopra UMF. si forma di fatto nel 2015 nella sala più piccola di un club londinese. Allora avevo appena iniziato a suonare come DJ e sapevo che per me sarebbe stato il modo migliore per fare gavetta.Così, una volta ogni due mesi, invitavo qualche amico a suonare con me, spesso facendo set ibridi con strumenti dal vivo. Questa opportunità si è trasformata rapidamente in un collettivo (il primo anno UMF ha avuto un team diverso).
Poco più di un anno dopo ho conosciuto Carolaina ed è coinciso con il periodo in cui stavo valutando di abbandonare l’idea di proseguire UMF. La sua passione ed entusiasmo per la musica hanno fatto sì che iniziassimo una lunga amicizia e a collaborare. Carolaina era il mio partner perfetto per la sua conoscenza tecnica di come affrontare budgets, logistiche e tutto ciò che a me ha sempre dato una solo mal di testa e confusione incredibile.
Qualche mese dopo Jacopo ed Hila entrano a far parte del team. Jacopo con le sue conoscenze nell’ambiente di arti visive (i nostri eventi sono sempre stati accompagnati da mostre di artisti locali) e del settore marketing. Hila con il suo talento e stile distinto ha creato il branding e tutti gli artwork fino a qualche mese fa.
Posso dire con certezza che UMF. non sarebbe lo stesso senza il lavoro di un team che è stato affiatato per molti anni e che ha condiviso molti alti e bassi. Per noi il V/A in uscita rappresenta (in un modo romantico) la fine di un’era e l’inizio di un nuovo percorso. Con dispiacere abbiamo visto l’uscita di Hila e Carolaina dal team ma siamo molto determinati.

Offering an unconventional and creative take on experimental arts is their goal. We present the collective and the Under My Feet label.
Experimental arts and music are topics that often, especially in Italy, remain marginal to the general public. However, solid and established European realities have sprung up over the years, bringing to the attention of their ‘audience’ a parallel and atypical way of appreciating sound and images. We have the pleasure of presenting a collective founded by two Italian artists, between London and Berlin, with the main objective of offering the world a singular and experimental sound and visual spectacle: Under My Feet.
Ireen Amnes and DE:MA are the two artists at the top of the project. They both share a great passion for industrial and experimental music, and often share an intense search for strange and distorted sounds. In 2015 in the UK Ireen founded, self-funded, Under My Feet. with the aim of offering a series of events in which each artist could express themselves in the most intimate and sincere way. By constantly promoting the surrounding emerging scene, the collective has established itself as a pivot for experimental and creative arts.
Thanks to the rich artistic-musical background of the two producers and the various figures gravitating around Under My Feet. the collective’s musical offerings are never banal. Their music is characterised by noise, experimental, post-industrial, industrial and IDM genres. Over time, they have played 18 events throughout Europe, moving between London, Berlin, Milan and Rome. There have been important collaborations with artists such as Drew McDowall, Hiro Kone, Puce Mary and others.
We had the pleasure of chatting with Ireen Amnes and DE:MA from Under My Feet.
Hello Jacopo, hello Ireen it is a pleasure to have you here on Parkett, welcome. I would like to start by getting to know you better from an artistic-musical point of view, with a focus on the Under My Feet collective.
Jacopo: Hi Riccardo, thanks for the invitation. Ever since I was 16 I have been obsessed with electronic music. I started producing music exclusively at 140bpm with the alias Fluid Cubo and shortly afterwards I started doing my first DJ sets in various clubs in Rome.
What drove me to move to London was definitely my passion for music, in Italy the scene was rather stagnant and I felt the need to move somewhere with a more exciting and diverse scene. I was lucky enough to meet artists who guided and supported me in my personal and artistic growth.
I joined UMF two years after its inception and from the beginning we worked hard to achieve our goals, getting to know each other and listening united by a common desire to promote experimental music. Before the pandemic, we were focusing most of our energies on events, but when the world came to a standstill we were able to shift our focus to the label.
Ireen: Hi Riccardo, music has always been a part of my life. I started studying music at the age of 10 (singing, acoustic guitar and piano). When I was 14 I started singing in piano bars; my father put me in that world to practice but I remember hating it because I found myself having to sing classic Italian pop/folk songs while I was totally obsessed with The Cure, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Slayer… At 18 I moved to England and that’s where I took part in several metal and progressive bands as a singer and bass player.
My passion for electronic music, on the other hand, started by listening to bands/artists such as Depeche Mode, NIN, Bjork, LFO (of course, then falling into the Warp Records vortex). My next path was dictated by a desire to experiment with sound. I was still in a band but was in the meantime learning to use Ableton Live and investing any savings on synthesisers and drum machines. In 2015, purely by chance, I was offered to curate a room in a London venue and that’s where UMF started.
Over the next few years my focus has been exclusively on electronic music production as a solo artist, although I recently started a new project in collaboration with Infinity Division ‘s.a.t.i.n.’; which recalls a post-industrial vibe in which I took up bass guitar and singing.
With UMF. on the other hand, the goal was to share the passion for a type of ‘sound‘ considered niche through the artistic programming of our events and consequently the label. It was a path that developed organically.
Would you like to tell us about the various projects and ideas you have been eveloping over the years?
Jacopo: This year UMF is eight years old and to celebrate it in the best possible way we have announced various artists to be released on 26 May. To mention a few names there will be an exclusive collaboration between Ireen Amnes and Drew McDowall, Vanity Productions, the Canadian duo Orphx ,Silent Servant and many other artists close to us.
Ireen: With the creation of the label, in parallel with the releases of unreleased music we saw the birth of ‘Live On Tape‘, a series dedicated to live sets recorded on cassette. This project is personally one of my favourites as it represents a tangible memory of a past moment at our events.
Regarding other projects, we definitely want to start curating more events in Berlin while continuing to work regularly in London. Our focus will definitely be on the label.
Experimental arts are a focal point of your collective, we would like to know how much passion and research is behind each of your ideas and insights
Jacopo: Noise, experimental, post-industrial, industrial and IDM music has always been present in subcultures and avant-garde arts. Since the 1970s, musicians and artists have used conventional media in unconventional ways to create new forms of art and expression. The aim of Under My Feet. is to create a situation that fosters this kind of performance, encouraging artists to break boundaries and push the limits.
The results are events that promote music that is atypical, but no less inspiring and appreciated. In the past, we have been able to best express our concept by organising exhibitions and artistic performances supporting the local LGBTQ+ community by providing them with a platform to exhibit their work.
Creating something from scratch, the fruit of one’s own efforts and sacrifices, requires reat determination. I would like to dwell on your path and which direction to take, to find out what the future holds and what difficulties have been encountered.
Ireen: As mentioned above UMF. actually formed in 2015 in the smaller room of a London club. At the time I was just starting out as a DJ and I knew it would be the best way for me to get my foot in the door, so once every couple of months I would invite a few friends to play with me, often doing hybrid sets with live instruments. This opportunity quickly turned into a collective (the first year UMF had a different team).
A little over a year later I met Carolaina and it coincided with the time when I was considering abandoning the idea of continuing UMF. but her passion and enthusiasm for music meant that we began a long friendship and collaboration. Carolaina was my perfect partner because of her technical knowledge of how to deal with budgets, logistics and everything else that had always given me an incredible headache and confusion.
A few months later Jacopo and Hila joined the team. Jacopo with his knowledge of visual arts (our events were always accompanied by exhibitions of local artists) and marketing; Hila with her talent and distinct style created the branding and all the artwork until a few months ago.I can safely say that UMF. would not be the same without the work of a team that has been together for many years and has shared many ups and downs.
The outgoing V/A represents for us (in a romantic way) the end of an era and the beginning of a new path; with regret we saw the exit of Hila and Carolaina from the team but we are very determined.
